Forums - Sales - Microsoft: "Halo: Reach sales hit $200 Million on first day"

(Reuters) - Microsoft said its new videogame "Halo: Reach" had racked up $200 million in global sales on its launch day, building strong momentum for the November debut of the Xbox 360 maker's new gaming system.

Spencer said the $200 million figure made "Reach" the biggest launch of any game or movie this year. "Halo 3" garnered more than $300 million globally in its first week. First-day global sales for "Halo 3" were not available.

The basic version of "Reach" costs $60, with special editions priced at $80 and $250. Microsoft is also selling a special Xbox console plus the new version of the game for $400. An Xbox normally costs $200 or $300 depending on memory size.

So, does this number include the bundle, basic edition, Collector's Edition and Legendary Ddition that was sold out?

If so then I think VGChartz is wrong about the 3M first day since it would equal 3.3M sold if the $200 Million was only the $60 version and not including an $80 and $250 version. Not sure about what MS was including with the sales, but anyone think the Special Edition Halo Reach Bundle is included in the $200 Million?

Either way, this is such an incredible number. Discuss!

Very surprised at no comments, especially considering that this comes straight from the source.

First day sales of halo3 were $170million in the US alone, so this has certainly sold less than halo3 did first day especially when you consider the high dollar value of some halo reach editions

All bow to me the VGChartz current reigning 3DS prediction champion

Bet with tbone51: Pokeon X & pokemon Y will not sell more than 8 million in 2013

Does anyone remember what VGC said Halo 3 did first day? Halo 3 did $300M first week and I am absolutely sure that high ups on VGC themselves said that remainder of the first week is usually equal to around 50% of first day, making Reach first week sales around the $300M mark, which judging by the editions along with the Bundle would make the launch smaller than Halo 3.

Part of thinks that this is why this thread is being avoided like the plague. Although to be honest I don't understand why. How many games can say they sold this much on just the first day? The numbers are still absolutely mind blowing.

Err, you do realize Halo 3 had the same legendary and limited editions prices that Halo Reach has? It had a hardware bundle console just like Reach too (though it did not include the game)

Also, is your source Microsoft on the Halo 3 170 million USA alone first day figure?

Halo 3 had a $120 bundle that was never claimed to be sold out, especially considering that you could find it everywhere. The Halo Reach Legendary Edition had news articles that had Gamestop claiming that they could no longer take preorders for it. Halo 3 had a $60 version and a $120 version along with a console bundle. Reach has a $60 version, $80 version, $250 version and a console bundle.

The situation is absolutely different.

If Microsoft's numbers include bundles and all game SKUs than it is very very possible that Reach launch was smaller than Halo 3 launch. Also the fact that the Halo 3 bundle didn't include the game makes this now Halo 3 and Halo 3 Legendary selling $300 Million vs. Reach, Reach Collectors, Reach Legendary and Reach Bundle selling $200 million.

I also didn't mention the $170 Million first week US numbers. I am just going by what Reuter's and Microsoft are stating.

Well I avoided this thread because I already read that 2 days ago. You're just pretty late methinks.

Also ioi says the 200m figure is only for the US and Europe: http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/82014/halo-reach-sells-over-3-million-units-in-the-first-24-hours/

Also it apparently had a bigger opening than Halo 3 in the US.

So anwwer me this. Who is right?  ioi saying it is US and Eu only or Spencer saying it is Globally?

Microsoft or VGChartz?

Edit - Actually Japan probably wouldn't add much for Halo to be honest, but still that doesn't answer how VGChartz says "Over 3M" and 3.3M for example would be the number if we only counted the $60 edition.

We know for a fact that this $200M number isn't only for the Basic Edition, but also includes the $80, $250 and quite possibly the bundle as well since it actually includes the game this time.

It is entirely possible that VGChartz is wrong.

I agree it's possible, but you cannot determine it by the info we have.

The Reach Legendary edition is $149 just like the Halo 3 "Cat Helmet" edition was: http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Reach-Legendary-Xbox-360/dp/B002I0HCVK

Also, whether they sell out or not is dependant on supply. With Reach, Bungie said the limited editions would be more truly limited, because last time there were so many extra Legendary editions Halo 3s they ended up selling at cut rate prices.

So once again "not selling out" tells us nothing about how many sold. This time around they reduced supply of the special editions. Or so they claim.

But the Reach has a $60 regular, $80 Limited, and $150 Legendary, the exact same as Halo 3.

Thanks for the price correction on the Halo 3 Spartan Helmet Edition (Not sure of the actual name. Legendary?)

Also I must admit that Reuters just fucked up bad with the $250 number.

I will need to now go back and look at the numbers, but still either way, with the Reach Console bundle now actually including the game I still skeptical that VGChartz numbers are correct, but don't think I am trying to take digs at the game. I am just trying to find something truly interesting to discuss with people here.
