Rumor: Nintendo 3DS may be capable of Gamecube and Wii ports

Nintendo are still remaining tight lipped about the upcoming Nintendo 3DS hardware specs. Sure, we know it’s 3D but apart from that, very little is known. Certainly the demo’s we’ve already seen are extremely impressive. But new information has come to light that suggests that the Nintendo 3DS may be very capable of something more than we’ve expected from a handheld.

Nintendojo recently had a conversation with n-Space Creative Director Ted Newman. Newman was one of the guys behind the innovative ‘Geist’, a tactical first person shooter game for the Nintendo GameCube. n-Space also worked on a title called “Winter” – a prototype that has been since dropped for the Nintendo Wii.

Newman was asked whether Winter would be ‘technically possible on the 3DS’. His response;

“The 3DS is really powerful, just going beyond the 3D screen side of it — what it can do in terms of pushing polygons and using advanced texture shaders. It’s really no secret how strong of a system it is.

“Everything we did with the Wii demo of Winter would absolutely work on that system. And there’s a lot more you can do, especially with a game like that, a survival-horror game in 3D. I mean, I can think of 10 ideas off the top off my head right now.”

He was then probed about whether a title like Geist would be difficult to port over to the 3DS;

“No, because there’s a lot of similarities between the systems [GameCube and 3DS] in terms of bringing one engine over to work on the 3DS,” Newman answered. “You know, if Nintendo was interested in getting a Geist game on 3DS, it’s certainly doable. As a fan of Geist and as someone who worked on it for three-and-a-half years, I’d love to see it. I love the whole mechanic, and I love that whole universe.”

If GameCube and Wii titles would work on the 3DS from a technical point of view, one has to wonder how much more guts the machine has. Time will tell.

That would be epic and incredibly impressive. I'd love to see all the technical specifications.

let's just say that Geist is one of the last games I want to see ported over from the gamecube to the 3DS.. xD

Any other game = Awesome!

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

So this would confirm that 3DS had even more power then Wii? If so just awesome.

Hard to say.. cause what we have seen from Winter was hardly pushing the Wii...

i think that would be nifty.

 Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

Metroid other m on 3DS would be cool, but i Have it one already.  I'de like to see some Gamecube ports like wind waker, starfox adventures and f-zero GX.

Buying in 2015: Captain toad: treasure tracker,

mario maker

new 3ds

yoshi woolly world

zelda U

majora's mask 3d

PSP sometimes gets Wii ports too, but that doesn't mean anything.

That doesn't necessairely is a good thing...the PSP also had ultrapower, and that didn't help it too much...I hope Nintendo isn't just going to upgrade the graphcis, but actually delivers awesome games (not only 3D ones). They HAVE to announce a 2D Mario for it. Only then buy it shall I.

Above: still the best game of the year.

baten kaitos port and you can have my wallet :D
