Forums - Sony - PSP2 is real, 'pretty powerful' and in developer's hands.

Are you referring to something?  I'm just saying that Nintendo had dominant mindshare in the handheld market.  Whenever once company dominates for year and suddenly a new challenger appears, bumps in the road and missteps are likely.

Sorry. I thought you meant "monopoly" to mean "Nintendo just magically dominates handhelds, so it excuses why Sony screwed up with the PSP", that I've seen a lot.

Lol, can't we all just get along?

As I precicted a few months ago about how a compeititor would fare against the 3DS:

It will be like if the Dreamcast launched AFTER the PS2, this will get ripped to pieces. (unless Sony pulls something REALLY REALLY impressive)

In an extreme circumstance, if Sony handles this perfectly, it could be the relationship between the Xbox 360 (launches early, rave reviews, enormous amounts of third party support, and even more first party support than the 360) and the Wii (laughed at, ridiculed, weak hardware, trounces everything for three and a half years).

But I really don't see Sony doing what Nintendo did with the Wii. So, while your analogy may be a little extreme (It's not going to send Sony out of the business), I can see where you're coming from.

But I hope it's closer to the first, because the PSP wasn't a bad console, it just used a terrible disc format, didn't have enough buttons or analog sticks for what it was trying to do, aimed at completely the wrong audience, and was thoroughly outclassed by the DS.

How thoroughly? I mean, if anythng the PSP games are gettin better as time goes on.  Maybe it was a slow burner, but there have been gems coimg out lately.  We all know it was beat and the DS overall did better, but I think the PSP was quite respectable considering the market it was suiciding into lol, what with Ninty having a monopoly on handhelds.

PSP was very successful for what it was.

I LOVE ICELAND!

might be bigger then 3Ds?

Whoops! Looks like a loose-mouthed developer at Warner Bros. has let a certain cat out of a certain bag, with Mortal Kombat Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick stating that his team has the next generation PlayStation Portable.

"We have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support," says Himmerick. "Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is."

Like all good Sony projects, this is looking like one of the worst kept secrets in town. Just like the PSPgo, inFAMOUS 2, Resistance 3 and Killzone 3. Sony is this industry's perpetual leaky faucet.

I undersand that Destructoid's staff is composed entirely of trolls, but blaming Sony for something the head of a small studio says to a small website at a (relatively) small event?

How are the blaiming Sony for what they guy said? They're blaming Sony for poor leak control.

What are Sony going to do, send in an assassin to kill the interviewer and Himmerick and invent stories for their innocent deaths?

I imagine Sony's instructions were "Here's the PSP2. Start working on this. Do not tell anyone that you have this", or something of the sort, and Himmerick...I don't know, maybe he was drunk.

Me want.

Honestly, I've never been much of a handheld gamer, but everythign I've seen of the 3DS and all the potential to be had in a PSP2 have me very excited abotu the next generation of portable systems.

Add in a touchscreen, full PSN functionality, full BC for PSP downloadable games, and support for PS2 classics and I'll be all over PSP2.  Add in smartphone capabilities on top of all that and it'll be the ultimate package.

Well Nintendo seems to have ways of getting developers to talk as little as possible.

So either Sony isn't doing it that well, or this is just publicity.

It wasn't really aimed at the wrong audience.  The main problem was that it was before its time.

It was one of the first handheld convergence devices - a single device capable of handling games, movies, music, and more.  The issue is that it's functionality and codec support for these formats was pretty limited, and it was quickly outclassed by the the first proper wave of convergance devices that hit 2-3 years later (the iPhone being the most notable).  On top of that it was static hardware in a market knowing for seeing significant technical improvements year on year.

It was doing pretty darn well over those first 2-3 years, but it quickly became old and outdated, and since then it has relied mostly on hardcore gamers and people who want free games for sales.  All the while it still retains the pricetag of a device that's far more than just a games machine, yet most potential buyers don't give a rats ass about all the extra features.

Anyone who sees a prototype almost certainly has to sign a very strict non-disclosure agreement in the presence of lawyers with very SEVERE penalties if broken. There will also be a high level of security so it is unlikely that Sony would let any materials off campus. Anyone working with such a prototype would likely have to work inside a Sony facility.

Or Sony is incredibly stupid with security...

Take your pick.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.
