SE has made many games that failed financially, they didn't meet expectations (but they don't say this openly to the public) The amount of assets  FFXII uses are far more than many of the games you mentioned, with Heavy Rain as an exception (However Sony is the publisher, so we can't say how much is the profit when you publish a game on your own console, right?)

SE is known to spend a lot of money on their games, far more than many other developers. While profit may not be the main reason for going multiplatform, it surely is one of the goals (after all the acquisitions and stuff)

I also think that SE spends a lot of money to make their games, but do they really need to?  I really don't know, and I'm not in a position to tell them how to run their business  But if other companies can spend less and continue to successfully function to help cater to their fans, then great.  So SE still doesn't have to go multi-platform.  Again, not saying they shouldn't.  I'm just respectfully disagreeing with you that companies don't always have to go to "out of ordinary" measures to financially survive.

at the same token, you're talking like all SE games are really expensive... sega isn't financially surviving because of valkyria chronicles, much more so because of those Sonic and Mario Olympic Games. Just how SE isn't surviving because of TWEWY which is an exclusive amazing game for DS.

Plus they had their most profitable year last year.  Really though Final Fantasy was multiplat for 7, and 8 as well... On PC.

I disagree since quality exclusive games such as Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, and Valkyria Chronicles have been successful financially while considering they sold less than FFXIII combined.  I picked these games as examples because they sold less than FFXIII combined while also being on the last place console (PS3 of course).  Also, these games cater to their fans.  And if ratings are a strong factor to some, these games received a higher average rating per title than FFXIII.  I'm not saying SE cannot go exclusive.  In fact, I praise them for going multi-platform with FFXIII when the 360 version announcement was first made.  But nothing you are saying holds water in the belief of the requirement of going multi-platform when making an HD game.

I see your point there, but wasn't SE profiting anyway BEFORE the release of FFXIII in Japan while they were spending resources in developing FFXIII?  But Valkyria Chronicles was still financial successful in its own right.

Without a doubt, SquareEnix is NOT the former Squaresoft who once catered to their fan base regardless of platforms.  But I hope the death threats are just empty words "spoken" by a few ravenous individuals and nothing more.

Actually, I would argue they are trying to cater to fans by getting the game in as many peoples hands as possibe.  The people upset over this are just a waste of space.

Depends, if its multiplat or if they release the extra as DLC, fans have no reasonable reason to be angry. But if the international edition with extra contents is exclusive on 360, its understandable and reasonable for fans to be angry. Just to precise, im not saying its a reason to threaten Wada physical integrity, though.

Who cares FF has lost its mojo with many after that last game.

FF loses "mojo" from the fans with almost every release. Side games included like Dirge of Cerberus, Crystal Chronicles, etc.

With that said, sales don't seem to have been affected that much. Still the most popular RPG series.

True, correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't all ff dropped in sales since VII. I know XIII sold well because its multiplat, but I don't think it will recover from the dissapointment of this last one. Also I admidt that after years without a new ff people will forget its mediocroty, but if versus comes out in 2011 I will still strongly remember my dislike for 13 and not buy versus.

no in order of sales from FF7
FF7>FF10>FF8>FF13>FFXII>FFIX

Wow I guess this series won't die, well heres to hoping they make a game I like next time.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

In the end, I think its more of a matter of the extra contents not being announce for PS3 aswell. Why not release the international edition on both console? Its understandable for fans to feal cheated. Even more so, it was stated by square that the extra was removed from the game. Was it all schedule like this from the start? Did the extra content could have been there at the PS3 release? I dont know, but thats legit questioning to have in this situation.

Yes, well Fiscal Year included the first month of NA/Europe FFXIII sales and Japanese Sales. As well as DQ IX sales in Japan. So it's not really too hard to guess why that was their most profitable year.

But yes, they were making profit before while developing it. I'm sure you understood. But I agree with you on Multiplat not being necessary to make money.  As I'm sure those Nintendo Exclusive Dragon Quest Games and Dragon Quest Spinoffs make money, and other more cool games like TWEWY.

But, I'm not sure that FFXIII didn't benefit from being multiplatform. And how much it cost to port. How much if any Sony, Microsoft paid for timed exclusivity in regions. And how much did FFXIII actually cost to make. No one really knows besides them. Everything so far is just guesses. By me, or anyone... unless there are spies XD

Sales have been down since VII, but sales are still stronger than some past releases like IX, XII, X-2. There have been a lot of mediocre games in the FF series and we can't pretend everyone hates XIII.

If people really hated XIII, it wouldn't be selling as well as it is.

Still there seems to be a lot more fan hate for this game than any other, but some people hated twelve while I loved it so who knows. Just think man of how many ff13 hate threads were made after its release.

Also I presume from your response that you actually like XIII?
