The wii is down severily compared to last year..

and it's $199 this year compared to $249 last year, and it has a new color, AND it's bundled with wii sports resort..

*raises eyebrow*

2009: 8,945,173

2010: 8,727,181

If -220,000 YoY is down "severily" (severely), then we have very different definitions of the word. Now, if you were talking about compared to 2008, then you might be on to something.

Nevermind it's actually up YTD in Japan and the US versus 2009.  People are making too many proclimations without actually looking at the numbers.

Funny thing is 2008 had over 11million in the same time frame (a real severe difference to 2009/2010), yet 2009 still had a larger holiday.

True, EU is the main issue here. However it will start trending down by alot from now till the holidays. and unless Wii party DK manage a big boost in the west, there certainly looks like another 20% decline on the way. It is way too close to the PS3 now

It's going to decline YOY for the 2nd half obviously, but so probably is every platform except 360 (thanks to slim, Reach and Kinect).

Truthfully, I sort of think the platform that could potentially impede Wii the most at the end of the year is 3DS...

Cant hide the fact that the Wii will have a huge competitive advantage gone this years holiday.  No matter what you think of them the PS3 Move and the 360 Kinect remove the motion control advantage to a signifigant extent.  No NSMBWii or WiiFit advantage either.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

The rise in sales form the 360 slim have little if anything to do with Wii's decline. Wii's decline has everything to do with the weakness of its lineup this year (in terms of hardware movers). During the holidays Wii will have the first hardware movers since NSMB Wii, and will probably end up selling a good 3.5 - 4 million in US in December, then all this doom and gloom talk will be shown as pointless.

The fact is that for the entire 2010 thus far, people have had NO reason to buy a Wii, other than the older games like Wii Fit, Mario Kart, NSMB Wii, etc. But even mega hits like those cannot singlehandedly carry a console for years on end.

wow considering it was so down on monthly sales the past couple of months, I had developed that assumption..

Sorry Metallicube when you have 70M consoles already sold a title isnt going to cause everyone to run out and purchase a Wii.  It is the library and what the console offers. Pre 2010 holiday Wii was your only choice for a motion controll system.  That is now gone.  A couple of long time Nintendo faithful titles arent going to cause a bunch of people that dont have a Wii to go all nostalgic and pickup a Wii for them.  The people that would go nostalgic have already purchased a Wii.

Tell that to the PS2. The console has sold a good 140 million units. There's absolutely no reason Wii couldn't sell those kinds of numbers too. Keep in mind the Wii is still outpacing the PS2, despite having zero hardware movers in 2010. Though I think somewhere in the ballpark of 100 - 110 million is more realistic, since it does not have near the 3rd party support PS2 had, plus the added sales of people rebuying for the slim and the issue of consoles breaking down. So it will probably not outsell PS2, but will certainly outsell PS1.

Whatever, I'm done arguing that Donkey Kong Country is going to move consoles, because the sales will speak for themselves when they come in November (although I'm sure some people will still use the excuse that it's just the holiday boost rather than the game). But I will say one more thing, it's not about nostalgia, it's about making a great game that appeals to a wide audience. Donkey Kong Country is a game that seems to accomplish this, as NSMB Wii did. Side scrolling platformers are games that are widely loved by many, but rarely made these days, creating pent up demand, which is why I think this game can be huge.
