Forums - General Discussion - College degrees are a waste of time, money and effort.

College degrees are a waste of time and money. IMO a trade is a better career path than a generic college degree with no career path/ direction. IMO a trade qualification  is far more valuable than a college degree. College is becoming more and more expensive and with the economic downturn: fewer people will be able to afford to take out high student loans to fund private college tuitions.

When considering a university/college degree ensure there are adequate jobs available and take the steps to secure future employment in the field. Related work experience is rarely included in the university education.  Little or no work experience puts graduates at a disadvantage of securing employment. There is an over supply of higher degree graduates with limited chances of securing employment. Carefully think about that college degree with your family and friends. It may leave you in financial ruin and a life time of regret.

College degrees in the US will often lead you with high levels of debt which you may not ever be able to pay back. The academic and media have lead society on a path to debt and financial ruin by encouraging and promoting the College dream. America needs factory, construction, labourers, retail workers just as much as these high paid white collar professional jobs. Lower academic ability students should not be encouraged to study college degrees and go into debt.

The majority of university/college education is progressive socialist claptrap. It is a waste of time and money and it will often leave you in huge debt.

BTW: The above  rant is just my view/opinion on college education.

While I compleyely agree that you absolutely must do your research, all I have to say is ok, have fun with your hourly job.

-edit-

I will add the college or degree themselves cannot get you a job.  If you go in thinking that you will fail.

This sounds like sour grapes.

It just depends on what you want to do, I would agree that there are lots of jobs and careers where a college degree is unnecessary, but there are some where it is absolutely required for you to have a chance at getting a job.  There is no trade school to be a Chemist, Physicist, or Biologist.  At least if you want to do something beyond just being a lab tech.

My career path:

  • Got out of school and joined the military (good experience for the future and looks good on an application)
  • Got out of military and got a job at a factory.
  • Quit job and moved to Atlanta.  Worked at Wal-Mart until I became a customer service manager.  Quit Wal-Mart and worked for a shoe store were I became assistant manager.  Good work ethic played a part.
  • Left Atlanta and went back to the factory in my hometown.  Good work ethic/positive attitude quickly led to me becoming a supervisor.
  • Left that job to become a cop.  Gained lots of respect because of dedication, positive attitude, and work ethic.
  • Left law enforcement to become a Nuclear Security Officer at a nuclear power plant.  Experience in law enforcement or military was a must.  I get paid insane money (hundreds more a week than being a cop) to play PSP, watch youtube, lift weights, and read comic books.

I live much better than the average person in my town--including the honor role students (I was a C student, myself) and the college grads.  I lucked out because the right people in the right places noticed me (even as a shoe salesmen, a guy came into the store and gave me a business card--telling me that I had an amazing attitude and if I ever needed a job, to give him a call.) and helped me get where I wanted to be.  My next step?  Becoming a nuclear technician after taking aptitude test and being sent to training, of course.  Education is good.  A good attitude, a love of boobs, and work ethic will take you farther.

I'm hoping to get enough assets to have a passive income that can meet my expense (through investing and so on).

and college degrees are pretty important, it adds extra stuff to your CV

Isn't this the same job that Homer Simpson has?
