Forums - Nintendo - Iwata Talks: Social acceptance of gaming

I don't need to be "socially accepted" if I play a game. Who cares?

Iwata is talking about this from a business perspective. Companies care about the social acceptance of games (not gamers, but games themselves) because it means that mroe people will buy games.

The "what come next?" box seems to indicate a new Wii peripheral seeing as it is sitting next to a Wii Remote, Wii Balance Board and Wii Wheel. It should be noted that the next peripheral Nintendo will probably release for Wii is the Wii Vitality Sensor. I expect an announcement on that at Nintendo's next major show which will probably be in October. I also expect to hear a price drop announcement around the same time of around $50 (USD) to keep sales flat YoY going into the holidays.

Actually, its important for success in terms of sales.

I don't think price cuts are possible anymore for the Wii.

Why? Probably the cost to produce the Wii is around 50$ now, for DS even less. The can cut comfortably the price twice, but they'll do this just if the 3DS gives the profits they would loose doing that.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

Clearly you forget game companies aren't businesses they're actually charities that take huge losses on the games they produce cause they love their fans... tee hee

So really Microsoft and Sony are saints, and nintendo is the devil!

It all makes sense now, the sales, the fans, and the addictive games....all signs of devils.

I don't like their concept of turning casual house TV watchers into 'gamers'

Gaming is something... you have to be sucked in willingly

Their strategy is to convert regular people, make something that looks very appealing, let them buy it a few games, then they stop using it.

It worked brilliantly with the Wii and I bet you it's going to work great with the 3DS.

Kind of reminds me of Kotick's strategy of sucking an IP dry and moving on to the next one

"Nintendo has created entertainment products under the development concept of hardware and software integration, primarily driven by unique and original software."

This is what Sony and Microsoft fail to understand about their motion controllers.  It's all about the software.  Software comes first!  Saying "look, we have this crazy new controller interface!", showing some snazzy tech demos, then announcing a bunch of Wii clones ain't gonna cut it.

Wii Sports made the Wii what it is, and other, fresher software releases have kept that momentum going.  We're currently at a low point in terms of new software releases, and the Wii is suffering in sales as a result.

We'll see how things go with Sony and Microsoft's foray into Nintendo's territory this Christmas, but I doubt it'll be pretty.

How do you know that they fail to understand this? Theres a difference between knowing and doing, so even people who know what to do can and do fail to pull it off. I personally see nothing wrong with the software they are offering. Even if they each only have a few games which sell a few million each, each good game is a system seller if you call the peripherals the system in that sense. I personally don't share your pessimism in relation to the new interfaces.

P.S. You are evil incarnate for not replying to me on Steam, foul knave.
