"It's the Wii" works right for it... It's been outselling the PS3 since day one for a reason... Nintendo's own games. The effect isn ow wearing off (although the Wii is still way ahead). Nintendo need to do something about it if they want sales to stay as high as they are (or have been).

I understand fine and dandy that software drives the platform, but with the Wii's releases along with a Pricecut... It should be expected to be up YoY, especially after the record breaking Holidays.

And I'm not changing the subject. I asked why it was down. You said software. I'm expanding on your answer...

Software does drive momentum, and NSMB did for months, but it can't be expected to forever. A console's momentum is driven by a) making it appeal to people whom it did not before (ie. new kinds of games) and b) generating and maintaining excitement for the platform (because excitement passing from person to person is the real world mechanic in the concept we call "momentum"). Wii had lots of a and b for the first few years but is now lacking in both. PS3 has managed to build momentum slowly mostly with b, and price cuts, because it is constantly getting significant new games and thus keeping users excited.

And seriously, you're claiming that a console should be able to maintain momentum based on a game released almost nine months ago and a small price cut almost eleven months ago, in isolation. That's ridiculous.

Your attempt to change the subject was to make it "who is to blame?" when we are talking about "why?".

The Wii has held momentum from a few games over months at a time before. I point you towards Wii Fit as the perfect example.

It seems then that the main reason the Wii is down is because of a lack of compelling software. Fine. Expand upon it. Why haven't Nintendo released anything this year (other than SMG2) that will keep sales high? Why are 3rd parties ignoring the system, in comparison to the PS3 or 360 even?

It's not changing the subject... It's expanding on it...

Nintendo is focusing most of its major releases towards the end of the year at the holiday season with Kirby, Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye, Epic Mickey, Wii Party, etc.. But that's not to say there are no notable games so far this year. Galaxy 2, Monster Hunter Tri, Sin and Punishment 2 are all solid titles, but again, these aren't really system movers.

As I said, they are also focusing more of their resources on 3DS as of late.

I wish I new why 3rd parties shut out the Wii. My most logical guess is they feel safer on the HD consoles because they know more of what sells to that audience, while with Wii it is more of a trial and error, more of a guessing game, since it takes a bit more to sell to most Wii owners.

People should stop worrying about the wii. Despite everything, is still selling more than ps3, and is selling less than the X360 only because of the Slim.

Seriously, just wait till October.

Ps3 : Slim Release Price Cut HuGe System Sellers Like UnCharted 2 , God of War 3 and FF XIII...

360 : Slim Release NO Price Cut HuGe System Sellers Like Mass Effect 2 , ODST and Forza 3. Helped Moving Some Xbox´s.

Wii : No Slim , No Price Cut and no system sellers already.

Keeps higher than Ps3 ... So remember me why should Nintendo be worried ?

Uncharted 2, & God of War 3 aren't huge system sellers. GOW3 could be a slight system at best.

Wii Fit was not in isolation. Super Smash Bros. was near then and you had Mario Kart Wii shortly afterwards, and also third party support was much better back then especially for the expanded audience. Guitar Hero was still selling big on Wii, and the long sellers of 2007 were still making a difference.

I guess I could point you to my relative YoY comparison graph that showed the Wii decline in momentum actually happened in mid 2008, after only a short software drought momentum was already stalling, it only becoming obvious in 2009, but I think you have seen it before. The above factors mitigated the situation, the decline was only really obvious in 2009 because of those, but even then momentum could not be built when games were not releasing regularly enough.

It's hard to be excited about a console when you only get big games every six months or so, it's really as simple as that.

If you want to "expand" on the subject, go ahead, but it's not necessary in order to understand why Wii is currently down YoY.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Yeah.. I find it funny that so many people are surprised with Wii's sales. I mean all they have to do is look at the titles released this year and it becomes quite obvious why the console is down.

I actually expected these sort of numbers going into 2010 for Wii, because I examined what was being released the first 9 months of the year. Core gamers began cheering that Nintendo is finally making games focused on them, but the tradeoff is their sales suffer a bit, as they divert attention form the expanded audience. I mean Metroid Other M, Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment, Monster Hunter Tri.. These might be awesome games, but they sell mainly to a niche of core gamers, and thus won't really move consoles.

They don't really have that big expanded audience game until Vitality Sensor (and perhaps Wii Party). Luckilly this holiday they seem to have a pretty nice balance of core and expanded audience games, that can keep their core fans satisfied but also enable strong sales.

Afeter the 360 Slim boost effect I think till Kinect and Move release we gonna see this situation.

Japan   PS3 >= Wii >>> 360

Europe  PS3 >= 360 >= Wii

America 360 >> Wii >= PS3

With Kinect, Move and all multplataform blockbusters (MoH, CoD, AC, Fallout...)

Japan PS3 > Wii >> 360

Europe PS3 = 360 >>> Wii

America 360 >> PS3 >>> Wii

Dude i think u are completely WRONG! Wii isnt going at 3rd Place in EU not even 2nd in Americas... it will be 1st everywhere... Just wait till October... u really think Ps3 has any chance agains wii in Americas ?? Serious ?? Not even 360... Plus 360 > Wii in europe ? i believe in Ps3 ONLY DUE TO GT5 BUT 360 ???? Dude 360 has no GT5 to smash Wii in EU.

I'm hearing of supply constraints for 360s, but I'm also still seeing 360 phats (Arcade and Elite) available at retailers. My question is: are the phats selling at the cut price, or has the market decided that even at the cut price the old skus are simply not worth getting and buyers will bide their time for the 360s, or wait for the 360s Arcade?

If it wasn't for 360s the charts in the last few weeks would have been the typical holding pattern as in previous years, and the rest of the consoles' numbers pretty much reflect this mid-year doldrums.

What I want to see is whether PS3 will drop below 100K for any week prior to Move launch. Despite what people and commentators think about Move's potential I'm certain there will be a Move bump (even if only as little as 5% for one week) on the week it launches, and PS3's lowest HW week for the year will happen before Move launches not after. August usually sees the lowest selling weeks for the year and PS3 only has a 20K buffer leading in to August. It will be an interesting one to watch.
