Forums - Gaming - 3 reasons why to NOT buy a new 3DTV for gaming.

I don't think you can fault Sony for the PS3 not working with Nvidia's 3D, for the 3D vision kit has to be connected to the PC. The PS3 has an Nvidia GPU on board which should be capable of using the kit, but I doubt  Nvidia is interested in providing drivers for that, because they want to sell high end graphics cards.

I played a lot of 3D at E3 (it was everywhere) including Crysis 2, DiRT 2, saw KZ3 running, played everything at the 3DS booth, etc. The 3DS was still the most impressive for me, despite the low resolution, but that's mostly due to the lack of bulky glasses and no image distortion/color loss. I understand your point, about wanting the best out of your visuals when you're paying that much. Frankly I won't play games on DLP because I don't like the way the picture looks, though I don't mind watching movies on them.

As for the games themselves, I'm afraid a lot of people are going to be disappointed with the first wave of offerings. Game developers haven't mastered 3D the way movie developers have, and many of them are still throwing crap at the screen and other cheesy crap they used to do in the 90s to impress people in IMAX theaters. This is an issue on both consoles and 3DS. You'll see it less in the two headliners: Crysis 2 and Killzone 3, and some of the 3DS games did it right, but I can tell you that you're going to need to switch off the 3D in Resident Evil 3DS if you don't want your eyes to bleed within 15 minutes.

But you were impressed by KZ3 and Crisis 2 werent u?

Btw, did u play Resi on the 3DS there? I didnt even know such a game announced.

Yes, both of those were great, but to be honest they were about all I saw that was great on the consoles. On 3DS KI, and most of the MGS3D demo were great. Otherwise the 3D wasn't used incredibly well. Again, it'll take a while for devs to adapt to the keys to good 3D (one of the big ones being to build games to add depth, rather than protrusion).

It's worth noting that I never got around to GT5 in 3D, which I heard was quite nice. I would guess it's a classy enough game they'd know how to do the depth effect properly. KZ3 and Crysis 2 though both definitely are 3D done right though... obviously I won't personally be picking up a 3D TV for them, but for those who do you'll get good experiences out of those two. Crysis 2 looks great running in 3D on Xbox 360 as well btw.

I'm really curious at how Crytek will implement this. Not because its technically not possible...its just as easy to make a 360 3D title if not easier due to 360s video card, 10MB ram on die and unified RAM.

Im interested in seeing if Crytek locks out all non HDMI 1.4 tech with the 360 version like the PS3 does. If they don't and they make it the same as Avatar or Invincible tiger...the 360 version will work with all kinds of 3D displays.

Actually, the hardware specs of the 360 really have no bearing on whether it could display 3D output the way that Crytek implements it. Their method only requires each frame to be rendered once which only results in less than a 2% hit in performance.

But the technique is current a "secret" proprietary coding technique of Crytek's, meaning until the code becomes open source or sub-licensed, Crytek is the only developer that will be using it.

The 360 won't have 3D compatibility because MS has gone on record as saying it's not worth it yet for them. They will wait until there are more 3D HDTVs in homes before they change their tune in regards to 3D support.

Thats interesting about Crysis 2. I can't wait to see it in action and the results...

The bolded is true for PS3 as well. PS3 doesn't have any special "3D compatibility" or drivers in the same form as X360 doesn't have one. The PS3 update was only a software update that emulates HDMI 1.4 since the console doesn't have it.

It is still up to individual publishers and developers to make PS3 games 3D by writing a driver that works best for that game. The PS3 doesn't do anything other than do the handshake with HDMI 1.4 TV.

Its correct to say that Sony is pushing 3D and getting a shitload of first party devs to make exclsuive 3D games for the console, and MS isn't doing this themselves on the 360.

However any 3rd party multiplat games can easily be ported to 360 in 3D if develper wants to.  The only difference is that PS3 will automatically tell the TV which 3D format to use (due to HDMI 1.4 update) where on the 360, the user will most likely have to choose the format his TV supports manually.

Your welcome to your opinion. Here's Home Theater Magazines opinion, "The 3d Era is Now". And they love the new Samsung un46c8000 3d tv's, in 3d and 2d. You don't like the glasses? There's no other way to do it, period. And don't bring up lenticulars, they suck, have a sweet spot and lower the rez by half. Disappointed 3d games are only 720p? How many games do you play on console right now that are higher than 720??? Price to high? I just saw the samsung for $1900, and am tempted. I plan on waiting for the reviews on the new 480hz Vizios next month. Sure, there's not much 3d games/movies out right now, but let's get the ball rolling. Killzone3D, LittlebigPlanet2(3d) and any 1080 nature film in 3d will be justification enough for me, and's there's much more coming.

Actually I cant find this Mitsubishi in UK or Germany so its probably just available in the US. Not even best buy Uk has it.

No warranty is actually a big problem I calculated 200 Dollar shipping costs from US but there are still Taxes and custom for this thing so i will end up probably with 1300 Euro for it. But no warranty pretty much kills it.

I found a 50 inch Samsung Plasma for 1500 Euro which is not that expensive imo. If the Mitsubishi DLP would be available in Germany or UK I would buy it instantly but I cant find it and I am searching the last 1-2 hours.

What do you think about the

Why is the Mitsubishi WD-60638 not available in Europe ?

They are US only TVs. In canada a few stores sell them like tigerdirect but they are really rare as well. I don't know why to be honest. I don't think Europe  received many DLP TV.

That Samsung you listed seems to be the entry elvel samsung 3D plasma. Its probably the exact same model I was going to buy. What can I say? If you are dying to play PS3 in 3D and have the money, I guess its not such a bad buy. But it is limiting to what you can do and is pretty pricey for the features.

If you want to drool over a TV check out the Mitsubishi 75 ich 3D Laser TV that came out last month - http://www.amazon.com/Mitsubishi-L75-A91-75-Inch-1080p-LaserVue/dp/B003KTN0AK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1279936251&sr=8-1

Supposedly the best picture quality you will see until OLED TVs come out.

I always thought Plasma has the best picture quality. Its sad that Mitsubishi doesnt offer any Tvs in Europe.tbh, I never heard from them before.

The only disadvantage I can see is that it weighs as much as I do. The Price is high but ok if you consider the size/picture quality and that its 3D ready.

lol, what did you read when you posted this. Certanly not my OP.

1. I am fine with wearing glasses

2. I've been gaimng in 3D for almost 2 years now with displays which are as good and better than Samsungs un46c8000. That TV has response time of 2 MILI seconds...which is still pretty high for 3D and you will see image ghosting and shadows. DLP TV I have on the other hand has a screen response time or 8 MICRO seconds. Thats a LOT less. No ghosting what so ever.

3. I have just finished singularity in 1080p and have beaten Battlefield BC2 single player in 1080p before that. Yes it was onPC... Just cause its not on a console doesn't mean it doesn't exist. These TVs will support PC 3D gaming in a few months, and they will still run at 720p depsite 2 year old monitors doing 1080p. Pretty lame if you ask me.

4. I didn't say anything about price being too high

5. Killzone 3, GT5 and whatever else sony releases on PS3 is a nice start. As is a nature movie lol. However anyone with a semi decent PC can enjoy tonnes of content in 3D already. There are many sites which have 3D videos you can download. Here is a site which gets weekly updates with new 3D videos - http://3dvisionvideos.blogspot.com/ That new Tron trailer in 3D looks amazing BTW.

6. If you paid 2000 dollars and already have the TV and the glasses that came with the TV, why wouldn't you want PCs to work with your TV?  You don't see that as a shortcoming of the TV?

7. All that 240/480 hz stuff is just marketting. Read up on it a little more before you pay a premium for your 480 hz vizio.

No one is stopping you form buying the new 3D TV now. But people with 2 cents of logic will wait till more content becomes available, or the shotloads of content that is already available using PC is supported...

Yeah, plasma was the best (Pioneer Kuro to be exact)

However most test indicate that laser TVs are slightly better when it come sto colors. They seem to jump off the screen a little better.

Here is one - http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/10/laser-tv-wins-e/

The laser ones are pretty heavy but the regular DLP TVs from mitsubishi really don't weigh that much when you think about it. 60 lbs for 60 inches is quite good...

Otherwise I agree that its a shame that these TVS are US only products. I actually think its a shame that DLP technology is going away, Mitsubishi is the last manufacturer making them. Bang for the buck...they just can't be beat.

think about this with the 3ds has no glasses. it will only be a matter of time before tvs will not need glasses for 3d
