Than again do u think i can get my hand on the next generation console beore this happen...

I think there will be many more generations of consoles before the demise of Earth, but I am no prophet. Also why does everyone assume that the Mayans predicted the end of the world. From what I have understood, they saw a new beginning. Mind after a dark period.

Ya they only said that something will happen on that day. The end of the world come from the part where they indicated that the sun will enter the dark rift of milky way and if this happen we will be without sunlight for a long time that will equal to the end of the world. However the prediction come from a drawing so what is said cannot be truely understand.

There are also mention of the 5th cycle is the start of the golden age where the ancient wisdom of mayan will return to earth. *Drawing saving plan for the next generation of console while typing*

I think the day will just come and pass and then people will realize the truth. The Mayans were just to lazy to make the calendar go beyond then because to them over 2,000 years seemed like a long ways away so whats the point.

Lazy people don't create 17 accurate calendars. Their calendar ends on the very day that we are at the equator or the Milky Way. Maybe you feel the Mayans just got lucky. The transition will at the very least be significant for some. Kind of like a New Years resolution. Some people experience a change in their life, others will find more of the same.

Haha, no, I mean they just figured they could just make another calendar when it was needed.  Would you sit their and keep making new calendars if it was needed in our current system that go up in the dates 3000 years from now?  I think they figured there was no point at the time so they just stopped at a good stopping point.

OK, let's pretend for a moment that I am open to this hogwash. Before giving it any credibility, we must ascertain the following:

1) What predictions did the Mayans make, especially in the long term?
2) How many of those predictions came true, and how many did not?
3) Of those that did come to pass, how many of them were correctly understood before the fact (as opposed to those "retroactive" predictions Nostradamus is famous for)?

Unless the answers are:
1) A lot.
2) Many, few
3) Most or all

there is no reason to give this any credit at all. Simply being able to make a good calendar does not make one a good forcaster of future events, any more than making a good thermometer allows one special insight into global climate change.

And I also wonder if such a forcast were made by my Uncle Tommy in Jersey City if anyone would care? Then why do we care that the Mayans said it?

I think its a testament to the Mayan's skill in astronomy, that they actually noticed the Cygnus Rift and gave it a name, without a telescope. That is mind boggling.

There are a few people who think that maybe the Mayans arrived at these conclusions by just random luck or something. Now that is mind boggling.

Not unless you also know all the other things they arrived at "by random luck" that were absolute bullshit. I can honestly tell you that I can throw a dart while blindfolded and hit the bullseye from 30 feet away...

... but I'm not gonna tell you how many darts I'd have to throw for it to happen.

Worse than extinction?

Allowing one asteroid to hit Earth will definitely cause destruction but seeing as our planet is mostly water, it may end up there. If it is a smaller asteroid I say let it hit cause even if it hits land the majority of damage will be on that continent. If you try to shoot it down you risk sending several smaller pieces hitting all parts of the Earth. If it is a really large asteroid, you want to shoot it as far from the Earth as possible so that it splits up and hopefully some of those still large pieces ends up missing the Earth completely. Of course some will still hit but a large asteroid hitting will surely spell extinction.

What, you think SuperTsunamis and massive volumes of ocean water being instantaneously evaported, would somehow be better than a land impact (which will happen anyway once the meteor impacts the ocean floor- the ocean is just not deep enough to stop a large meteor moving at normal velocity).

Picking a specific date that happens 1 in 26000 years, thats 9496500 days,  is more than just luck.

Having a calendar more accurate to the second then the one we have now is more than just lucky.

Granted, they can be wrong on a lot of stuff, but their guesses were based on observations made in their time, with the technologies they had.  Getting something right with just that is incredible.  Calculating it is more than mere coincidence.

@misterd
You kind of have a bad attitude. Anyways there is no need to get upset over the Mayan predictions because they can be interpreted in more than one way. Are you denying the 4 points I made in the opening post? All I am saying is that 2012 is a significant year. Read it again. The Mayans believed in a transition period in 2012. For some people this is enough and will provide a catalyst to change for the better. Like the person on the mountaintop that stares out and better understands himself. If 2012 is the end of the world that is okay too cause maybe we were not meant to live forever. At least living in a way that hurts one another so much.

Wasnt there a guy called Notradamus - the guy predicted WW1 & 2, 9/11 and The Great London Fire. Didnt he predict this aswell??

I don't know if the mayan predictions are worth listening to, i mean they sure didnt predict the spanish coming in did they?
The mayans were mostly gone by the time the spanish showed up. However, the Aztecs, who borrowed from mayan culture, first thought the spanish were gods.

He made all sorts of incredibly vague predictions, many of which are nothing more than nonsense.

But don't let that stop you from believing all this hogwash. Just keep in mind that people thought the year 1000 would be the end of the world... or the year 2000.

Oh, and most of the people posting in this thread don't know jack about basic science, wether it be how an asteroid impact would effect earth or quasars and the like.
