I think its a testament to the Mayan's skill in astronomy, that they actually noticed the Cygnus Rift and gave it a name, without a telescope. That is mind boggling.

There are a few people who think that maybe the Mayans arrived at these conclusions by just random luck or something. Now that is mind boggling.

Not unless you also know all the other things they arrived at "by random luck" that were absolute bullshit. I can honestly tell you that I can throw a dart while blindfolded and hit the bullseye from 30 feet away...

... but I'm not gonna tell you how many darts I'd have to throw for it to happen.

Picking a specific date that happens 1 in 26000 years, thats 9496500 days,  is more than just luck.

Having a calendar more accurate to the second then the one we have now is more than just lucky.

Granted, they can be wrong on a lot of stuff, but their guesses were based on observations made in their time, with the technologies they had.  Getting something right with just that is incredible.  Calculating it is more than mere coincidence.
