Worse than extinction?

Allowing one asteroid to hit Earth will definitely cause destruction but seeing as our planet is mostly water, it may end up there. If it is a smaller asteroid I say let it hit cause even if it hits land the majority of damage will be on that continent. If you try to shoot it down you risk sending several smaller pieces hitting all parts of the Earth. If it is a really large asteroid, you want to shoot it as far from the Earth as possible so that it splits up and hopefully some of those still large pieces ends up missing the Earth completely. Of course some will still hit but a large asteroid hitting will surely spell extinction.

What, you think SuperTsunamis and massive volumes of ocean water being instantaneously evaported, would somehow be better than a land impact (which will happen anyway once the meteor impacts the ocean floor- the ocean is just not deep enough to stop a large meteor moving at normal velocity).
