Forums - Nintendo - Give Us Back The Old Nintendo (Nowgamer article)

I'm not the best authority to say what Nintendo used to be, but me, who never ever owned a single Nintendo console or handheld since NES and G&W until Wii and DS came out*, as a part of their current audience should be a good indicator they are on track with being "Old Nintendo", probably.

*Well, I did, but after I got DS and eventually Wii, just to learn what this thing (Nintendo) is about. Overall, I liked it.

I kinda actually have to agree. But its all due to with strategy. For majority of the history of the gaming industry, Nintendo has always taken a blue ocean strategy. A blue ocean captures/creates a new market by indentifying new factors to compete on in contrast to a red ocean where it competes on existing factors. Initially where most games were focus on violence, nintendo created arcadie family style games thus creating a new market which they dominate as a result of their strategy. And today where the competition are focused on traditional gaming, Nintendo created motion based games and thus they capture a new market which enables them to dominate. Nintendo keeps shifting their focus, so I dont blame their frustration.

Blue Ocean Strategy

I'm not exactly sure it makes sense since this gen is the perfect execution of Blue Ocean strategy. Unless you are implying that Nintendo was focusing on Red Ocean in previous generations, Nintendo never shifted their focus.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I can't imagine what "game journalists" are gonna say about Kinect and Move when they release.

Umm, scratching my head here, why would Ninty want to change? They are the king of the world right now, they absolutely rule consoles, handhelds and nearly Dreamcasted PS3 3D and PSP2 with a tiny magical device called 3DS.

Your thread will be more fitting if was written 7/8 yrs ago at the time of Gamecube, me of a Sony Fan am so envious of Ninty's success that I so want to strangle their department head on how Sony never though of naked 3D in the first place.

If you spit on New Super Mario Bros. Wii and at the same time demand the old Nintendo to come back, then that's the biggest contradiction you can possibly make.

I remember the old Nintendo pushing games forward in great new ways, I mean the games, not controllers (power glove ftw!).  Games like the original SMB, SMB3, LoZ, Metroid, then later on advancing them again going 3D like Mario 64 and OoT.  This gen we got Zeldas -still- copying OoT with only minor changes, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 is just Mario 64 with changing gravity, NSMB Wii has gone back even further than the N64 and is copying SNES games, Donkey Kong has gone back to SNES and so forth.

When people say they want the old Nintendo they don't mean clones of old Nintendo games, they mean they want them making something new.

Yeah that's mostly what I mean myself.

Most over looked new IP of the gen it seems

Add in Excite Truck, Big Brain, Endless Ocean, Disaster DoC, Captain Rainbow, Dynamic Slash, Xenoblade, and The Last Story... yep no new IPs that Nintendo has brought or going to bring

Nintendo never made many "game changers" per generation in the old days, most of the time just evolving older existing IPs (ala OoT and Mario 64) people just have rose tinted glasses of the past, the same tactics used today were used in the past, every so often you got a new IP sometimes that new IP had really unique game play, most of the time they took an old IP and improved it so much that people in the industry flat out copied them... and that's happening now... so what's different?

NOT NEW IPs.   New types of game/game design.  Wii Sports is minigames that existed long before the Wii, we played those long ago.  Knowledge quizes and such existed, Disaster is just a bunch of old genres bunched together etc etc.

Swinging a wii mote instead of pressing a button is not some new for a games content, and that is what nintendo are lacking this gen.  A lot of us do not want a new way to do something old on screen, we want something new on screen.

Exactly what games on consoles this gen fit your standard of new game design/content?

Kylie is not going to answer this you know...

I think Gamerace summed it up quite nicely. There are three different kinds of people attacking the Wii; those who have issues with the business model of Nintendo (which is silly), those who are bitter because Nintendo aren't the same any more and have less to offer than before for them (I fall into this category) and there are those who are simply pissed because its selling a lot more than their console of choice.

Personally, I don't like the direction they are taking but I recognize the genius in the business model even still. The problem arises when there is no middle ground on forums and in articles, usually there are pure haters and pure lovers going at each others' throats, one thinking that Nintendo is a filthy pile of doodoo and the other thinking they are near divine and utterly infallible. We need more intelligent coverage with observations rather than silly articles, posts and remarks based purely upon hatred or doting.

All this brings me to why I still like this site better than any other gaming related forum; despite the complaints about morons speaking nonsense every now and then, this place has by the most intelligent posts and posters of any of the forums I've tried and this remains the only one I go to every day, several times a day.

You've summed up my feelings quite nicely, I'm one of the group that was rather disenchanted with how the game industry was going last gen which turned me into a PC gamer catching up on brilliant games I never had a chance to play, then the Wii came along with new experiences you can't even find on the PC and that even sparked my interest for the games I was getting bored of last gen which is largely represented on PC, 360 and PS3 now.

I personally don't see why there are haters this gen, some stupid PR has happened, but overall everyone has won and everyone won as a direct result of the Wii winning the generations console sales, Sony stepped up their game compared to last gen to produce amazing games to draw people to their console, Microsoft stepped up their game to offer a unique service in XBL with a lot of exclusives, and Nintendo has made games that aren't the norm you can even get some quality time with your friends and family while you're at it (and post some stupid videos of them playing on You Tube)

I love debating on these forums cause the guys that are legit in their feelings you can discuss the topic and both walk away thinking about a different perspective (which is why you're one of my favorite posters ), other times you do have those guys that are actually pissed about being a fan of one console and losing the "war" so they have to put down the others, they're annoying but most of the time it's fun to see them squirm when logic and facts are presented.

I don't understand why someone would say that the Gamecube was a bad console.

Here's a quick list of awesome games:

Luigi's Mansion

Pikmin

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Animal Crossing

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (Haven't played but heard it was cool)

Mario Party 4

Metroid Prime

Star Fox Adventures

Super Mario Sunshine

F-Zero GX

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Mario Kart: Double Dash‼

Mario Party 5

Wario World

Donkey Konga

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

Mario Party 6

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Pikmin 2

Battalion Wars

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Mario Party 7

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

And then there's also some cool third-party games:

Skies of Arcadia Legends

Tales of Symphonia

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean

Baten Kaitos Origins

Hate is a strong feeling that very few people hold.

I, in my case, feel disappointed and let down (it all started with Super Paper Mario *shake fist*) but I won't hate the Wii because of it.

It's not all black and white. It's not only you love or you hate.

@OP: Nintendo should never piss off its die-hard fans, because they are those that always save it when things don't go as well as planned (while "casuals" could betray it at any time), but hadn't it expanded its audience it wouldn't have become the almost invincible giant it currently is. The correct recipe, considering also that it doesn't lack the necessary resources, is to satisfy both old and new user groups.

Many people said that the original xbox was a bad console too. Some say the same about 360/PS3/Wii.
