Forums - Sales Discussion - Format war Bluray vs hddvd...

Why don't you just buy an external hard drive for 50 bucks?

Around the Network

It is clear that blu-ray will end up the winner,

It has the most support from movie studios(

-buena vista

-sony

-lionsgate

-20th century fox

-mgm

-warner bros

-dreamworks

-paramount

-new line cinema.

While hd-dvd supports

-Weinstein company

-Universial Studios

-warner bros

-dreamworks

-paramount

-new line cinema.

That is why you should notice that most of the movies are coming to blu-ray because most of the entertainment is siding with blu-ray. You should notice that the sales will be even more dramatic, due to the 2 biggest movies this year are coming to blu-ray only: pirates of the carribean and spiderman.

It will just be time until blu-ray wins, hd-dvd just doesn't have enough support. I do predict that it will end during the end of this year.

100 dvds gives me 400-450 gb of space depending on how much i put on each dvd, while it only costs me 30-40 dollars to buy online, a 500 gb harddrive will cost me a a few hundred dollars.

Another sign HD DVD is gaining some ground back?

I realize BluRay is still ahead here, but it seems the drastic differences are starting to end. Now with the HD player price drop, 70 new titles over the next three months, continued lackluster sales of the PS3... the war is not over yet! Though I still hold to my beliefs that buy the time regular dvd's are not the format of choice, downloading will be the actual new format.

no HD DVD has not gained any ground.

the recent release of MATRIX trilogy on HD-DVD saw the sales jump a little.

dont forget over 50% of ps3 owners have purchased atleast one BD disk.

In addition to that the BD players would be available for as low as 300$ from june.

TDK plans to release the 200gig BD disc in summer .

SONY plans to release SPIDERMAN trilogy(1 , 2 & 3 ) this year as well.

Ah Champ, the Matrix Trilogy does not come out until mid-May.  I think the chart at DVDEmpire is probably portraying the real market now that Casino Royale is running its course mixed with the fact all the coupons from the PS3 have been spent, and the novelty of BluRay for the PS3 owners is probably winding down considering the price of BluRay discs.  I still say as the PS3 sales continue to flop, some of these companies are going to start releasing movies on HDDVD.   Also, I noticed this weekend Circuit City was giving away 4 or 5 HDDVDs away with the purchase of a reduced price HDDVD player.  Combine that with the fact that HDDVD is releasing 70 titles over the next three months, they are not giving up the fight and I think things are going to be more evenly situated for the next few months.

I think it's funny that so many people think that bluray is the winner just from three months worth of sales figures and that most of those people only have a bluray player because sony forced them to buy one in the ps3. It's also funny that these people also rave that casino royal SHIPPED 100k copies but they don't say anything about it only selling less than 30k copies.

Totally different -

HD DVD was winning the next gen war before the PS3 came out.

PS3 was winning the next gen war before.... well never actually

well, id say that favord blu ray for ebing able to destroy HD DVD market share in a mere 3 months, whereas the PS3 had to deal with the 360 having a full year headstart.

I don't really care about either, so Im not going to get too involved in this thread. Just wanted to add one big thing though... Not sure if this is happening in the US, but it is taking off BIG-TIME here in Australia. A company sells/hires you a hard-disk playback box, and then you get content you then by TAKING the box to a retail store, and they copy movies over that you order. Our Internet speeds suck balls (and are generally too expensive), so this becomes a very viable distribution method. I can see this expanding when USB Flash drives/keys become cheap/large enough for it. And everyone has a video store near their house (in the cities anyway).

The cable companies are the ones on the forefront of VOD. They are extremely attractive to content providers because they can offer a 70/30 revenue split, whereas the dvd rental business is nearly the opposite.

As far as the playback device, cable companies are distributing DVRs right now for $10/mo with no up front costs. I could see them just integrating the DVR into all cable boxes. They can recoup the cost through VOD in the long run.

The cable companies also have a HUGE advantage over internet delivery, as they can deliver data as fast as the local network will allow. That could mean speeds 100s, sometimes 1000s of times faster than internet delivery.

VOD could potentially decimate the DVD rental business. I don't think I'd want to be Netflix or Blockbuster right now.
