Forums - Sales - Could the Wii will come 2nd in the 10 weeks to Xmas?

Depending on Xbox 360S arcade release date & price, and Kinect popularity, it might come second to Xbox 360, then again it probably will end up being: Wii -> Xbox 360 -> PS3 (not counting handhelds of course), but who knows? It might just get beaten by the 360 this time around.

It seems preposterous that the Wii would come second to any of the current generation consoles in the 10 weeks to Christmas or 'Holiday season'. However I wonder if the chances whilst slim are good enough to at least consider it a conversation topic.

I see what you did there. :P

Just to clarify, are we talking about this period?

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 25th Oct 2009 to 02nd Jan 2010:

Console Wii PS3 X360
Total
11,008,664
5,849,555
4,564,238
America
5,429,650
2,347,952
2,582,494
Japan
1,007,991
816,913
57,917
Total Others
4,571,023
2,684,690
1,923,827

Because if so, I really don't know how people can see X360 sales (the console people seem to give the edge due to Kinect) shoot up to over 8 million for that 10 week period, which is basically where it's going to need to be - and that's being extremely generous, because it also requires the Wii down 30% YoY.

Basically, the question is whether or not Kinect can push over 3 million X360's this holiday. That is, Kinect is sold to over 3 million new owners (people who are without a 360 right now), on top of however million sales to existing owners. I think the idea is laughable - even if Kinect is wildly successful, I doubt MS will produce enough to meet such demand.

I wouldn't be suprised if the DS or 3DS outsells the Wii this Christmas, pushing the Wii to second place

Quite unlikely. The only console that could do it is DS or 3DS, the other two home consoles don't have a chance despite the Wii's sudden and quite drastic drops, there's just too much space between them.

I predict that it will go like this:

#1_Wii

#2_P.S.3

#3_360

America won't be strong enough to beat Others and Japan together... if you were wondering yes I think that the P.S.3 will sell more than the 360 in those 10 weeks even with the 2 new Slims.

BEFORE the holiday season it could, but DURING the holiday season, there is no way. Nintendo consoles always get massive boosts during the holidays, moreso than anyone else. Even the Gamecube not huge sales boosts then. Let's not forget that there is Donkey Kong Country Returns coming then, which could have nearly as much impact as NSMB Wii did on sales.

I do not think so. The wii may not sell as much as last year, but I think it is still strong enough to outsell the 360 and ps3.

Donkey Kong Country will keep the 360 at bay in its strongest region, unless Dance Central becomes the real killer app that carries Kinect off far and away (possible. There is a good deal of strength behind that title at this point, but we haven't guaged its mass appeal).

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

So again, could the Wii come 2nd in the 10 weeks of Christmas? I know they sold a record number of consoles last year however the relative sales since then have opened up the possibility that the Wii might not be on top this coming Holiday Season.

Its an outside chance, Wii sales have to be down by a fair margin and one of the other console sales have to be up by a considerable margin for it to happen. So really its a confluence of two unknown variables. It would be pretty epic and unprecedented, but since when has this generation been following precedents?

Of course we all know its unlikely to happen, but hey it could happen and it makes for a hopefully more interesting topic of discussion for those who are here to talk about sales.

Didn't we have this same stupid discussion last year and the year before, and the year before?
