I remember this as well. I could think of two great applications straight off the bat.
1) Store displays.
Some one walking past a store while deciding to peek as they move won't be able to miss the picture. You can easily grab their attention.
2) If you can have 4 different inputs, each taking up a 90degree segment bye bye split screen. :P
Set that puppy in the center of the room, everyone gets their own screen, you don't have to worry about someone else looking at what you're doing to find your location or cheat.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.
Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

The desplay part of the screen isnt actually flat its angular like this /////////////\///
The images are produced and displayed on this surface so when you are in the "sweet spot" each eye gets the correct image.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if another screen is added to HD TVs that makes 3D effects after 3DS is a hit.
