Forums - Gaming - Gametrailers E3 BEST GRAPHICS award - Kirby Epic Yarn!

Kirby is the only Nintendo game that really caught my attention at the their show, the art style is great and in the video industry also quiete unique. But more interesting is the way in which the environment affects the gameplay. Really looking forward to this game, I'll have to unpack my Wii (hopefully).

Gametrailers gave it the best gfx awards to piss off people, there were more good looking games with similar art style that could've atleast been nominated. Shank, new Rayman or that super creepy platformer which is just Black and White (awesome artstyle). But pitting Kirby alone against technological powerhouses like Crysis, Killzone or Gears? Sorry but that's either retarded or on purpose, you pick...

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Gamestop? Lol.

OT: I can definitely agree with their choice. In terms of artistic innovation, it takes the show easily.

Really? :S I dunno mate, it definately stood out for me as well but Limbo, Child of Eden and the Journey? they all looked better artistically 'imo'

To each their own.

Yeah I agree :D

Don't get me wrong though, those 3 games look beautiful.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Limbo.

But I would've preferred if they had a section for technical achievement and a section for artistic innovation.

Agree. A lot more sensate than Gametrailers awards.

For me Kirby is the Game of the Show... but never Best Graphics with Yoshi's Story, Paper Mario and old Kirby art style... moreover Kirby has an interesting and innovative gameplay.

XBLA only. Full exclusive or timed exclusive though, that's beyond me.

But graphics are not the same thing as art style and overall beauty.

I also agree that Kirby is one of the most beautiful game shown at E3 but the best graphics is another thing.

What's graphics then? How many gray pixels can we put on a screen? I think graphics should have game design, art style and creativity. For example I'd put Children of Eden over any of those generic FPS on that video.

I agree with you alfredofroylan.  The graphics are what you see on the screen.  While art style and overall beauty are components of the graphics they should not be differing categories.  All of the components should make up the whole of the award.  Therefore, if one game, such as the new Kirby, is especially strong in certain categories of graphics while lacking in others, but the advanteges in these categories is quite strong, then it should receive the award.

Art is subjective, while the technical side of graphics is not, so when it comes to best graphics, one has to lean more towards the tech to be less bias, as the tech is pretty much black and white.

Problem with that line of thinking is that not all games are on the same platform.  I which case you'd have to weigh technical accomplishment against system spec... so you might end up seeing something like Other M, MGS3D or RE Revelations walk away with the award anyway...

Example. Mass Effect 1 on the 360 had great technical graphics, but terrible performance. As a result, I, along with many others, would give the game a mediocre graphical score.

You can take a fucking still frame photo and call it a game, and say "that game has great graphics" but it really doesn't.

Graphics are determined by 3 subcategories. For "graphics" to be good, they must perform well, look great technically at the time of their release, and have a good art direction or art style. If a game trying to emulate real life comes off looking like the Smurfs, then you  have a bad(or great) art style depening on your point of view. Games that focus on real life, have a real life focused artstyle. Gears of War doesn't. Have you seen the characters and humans in that game? It has an artstyle that emulates real life, but doesn't copy it. Thus, it has an interesting artstyle if nothing else.

Every game has an art style though. As long as games are still representations of actions, instead of the actions themselves, then art style will take that role, and artstyle will win out over already obsolete technical graphics every time. If the only use we had for technical graphics was to make things look closer to Real Life, then we would have a pretty boring and redundant industry. RL is just a benchmark that we are reaching for,it's certainly not the goal.

Thats my only disappointment with the game, it just doesn't have that great graphics in motion unlike its screenshots

Oh well still way better than other WRPG's this gen cept Oblivion of course.
