Forums - Nintendo - Why do Wii cost so much?

One of the main arguments people use when a dev decides to develop for the Wii is the cost, which is of course a lot smaller than for the PS3 and the 360.

My question: Why do we pay as much (or even more sometimes here in Norway) for the Wii titles which are so much cheaper to make?! Also, the Wii costs basically the same as an Arcade 360 here now, so it can no longer be called cheap in comparison with its competition.

Edit: I meant to add "games" in the thread title obviously.

Several developers have admitted that the Wii/DS games are the most profitable for them, and that the large development costs of Xbox 360/PS3 games mean that only the best titles of the year actually make money. The break-even (!) point for MGS4 is 1,000,000 copies on day one.

Therefore they are using the profits from ripping off (effectively) Wii owners to pay for "flagship" PS3 and Xbox 360 games.

What you can do is not buy titles if you don't think they are worth it. It's called capitalism.

And your point is what? Wii is selling at what the market is willing to pay, supply and demand

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Here in the UK Wii games are definitely much cheaper than PS3 and 360 games. I get my games from Asda (Walmart's UK shop) and Wii games never cost more than £32 while 360 and PS3 games cost £40 and over.

As for why Wii itself costs so much it's cause it's still selling so well so despite price drops for 360 & PS3 there's been no need to drop the price of Wii. When Wii sales start to drop then we can expect a price drop. Which means it will probably drop in Japan way before it does in US.

Yeah its a bit of a chip, but because they can I guess. I live in Australia where all new games have traditionally cost $99.95 (sux when us is $50 and the exchange rate is Aus$0.90 to us$1) but recently some major retailers have lowered to ~$80 and $40-$60 for budget and old games. While I think ps3 and 360 games still cost $100 or sometimes even $100.

My point is that many people think that PS3 and 360 games and accessories are overpriced, yet they're a lot more expensive do develop.
Strange logic; the cheaper production is, the higher the price of final products?

well here in US there cheaper then ps3/360 games

Here Wii games are usually 10Euros cheaper than Xbox360/PS3 ones, not that much of a difference, but there are budget titles (at 30 E) and first party titles (at 50 E)

Precisely. Buy that which you think is worth it. That was my point.

In Germany we get...

Xbox360 and PS3 games for 65 - 69 Euro

Wii games for 45 - 49 Euro. (1st Party titles are sold for 45, others for 50 Euro)

Some Wii games are as expensive as 55 Euro, though...

Still, that´s a difference of 10 Euro.

All in all I agreee with you, though. I´d like to buy my games for less but who wouldn´t?
