But talking about how violent God is in the bible is very relevant since its a very common misconception that God has only done good deeds. Which clearly isn't accurate, especially in the context of the old testament. But if the Old Testament wasn't useful and relevant for Christians, then why keep it in the bible? |
That would be a legitimate reason to mention that in the thread, but that is not the context in which MJ was speaking.
@ your final question: haha, are you serious? Like, asking for realz? It's RELIGION, man. You don't just update the firmware and throw the old shit away. I mean really, Jesus explicitly invalidated most of the old laws and junk but Christians still keep it around. Let alone the idea of throwing out stuff just because it's not currently "relevant".

Well, the content within the Bible is hardly something that I would want to change, because I'm not christian, plus reading the older laws and texts is interesting. It was just a point about how in your own words " Jesus explicitly invalidated most of the old laws". Nothing more, and its not something I wish to debate because it'll derail the thread into oblivion if we start talking about how manipulated the bible already is according to many scholars both religious and not.
Christianity is a very broad term that encompasses Catholicism, Protestantism, and Orthodox Christianity. Just referring to all of it as "Christianity" glosses over huge differences between the sects.
First, Catholicism has doing good deeds as a firm tenet. Mother Theresa, Catholic schools, Catholic founded hospitals, and more are evidence of this.
Second, Protestantism arose due to the Catholic Church practices of selling indulgences. Basically, Catholic priests were taking bribes from wealthy men and absolving them of all our their sins so that they could get to Heaven. This is why Martin Luther was nailing his theses on the door in effect starting the Protestant Reformation.
Finally, Orthodox Christianity places far less weight on sin and predestination than the other two sects. Furthermore, Orthodox Christianity is fully against statue making of Orthodox leaders.
There are some generalizations without mentioning the pope, but hey, I like this thread and want to mention the differences before we all paint Christians in one light.
To the thread creator, who are you speaking to when you refer to Christians? Catholics? Lutherans? Baptists?

Seriously not interested in getting into this discussion, but just had to comment on the inaccuracy of this statement.
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." - Jesus, Sermon on the Mount

As much as I don't like your views on gaming all the time. I pretty much have the same philosophy.

the only true thing about religion is the part where it says you should be nice to everyone... if everybody did this, then the world would be a great place to be in.
The catholics have the basic principle, so I like the religions that stem from it... to an extent.

This is the part that anyone with half a brain has a problem with. It's not fair. God must be smarter than this - surely.
