yeah and nintendo didn't even have elephants or skittles or oprah style giveaways

You don't need those when you let the game journalists get within a hundred feet of a hot girl.  Really Nintendo, I expected you to not be so obvious when "buying" good press.

wait what? Kinect isn't playable at E3?

especially when it was connected to their belts. I'm sure there are some real casanovas out there trying to get their hands on a free 3ds.

The point is critical reception.

The obvious difference being Nintendo did it leading the way when 70m console sales lay before them whereas MS (and Sony to be fair) are doing it to 'keep up' and are facing the fact of having to compete with each other plus the 70m incumbent Wii's for a share of the market.

MS aren't being an inovative disrupter here, they're aiming to go where others have lead - which is fair enough, happens all the time, but let's be real, if Wii hadn't been a success do you still think MS would have invested in Kinect the same way, given it the same priority and risked all on it (something they're no even doing TBH)?

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Kinect has proven nothing to me besides the fact that it cannot support the hardcore. Move is exact opposite.

Did you just compare E3 Nintendo 2006 to MS 2010?

Wow, this thread is epic.

Kinect will bomb hard. MS think they know the 'cazualz' unfortunately they haven't a clue. Microsoftcore and Sony need to concentrate on their next consoles now. Nintendo is gonna pull a 3DS with the Wii2 and gut Sony and MS like liddle fishies.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Regarding whether Kinect is playable: according to Major Nelson they have a Kinect speficic area, here was a pic of the line to get in (from Major Nelson's blog); http://twitpic.com/1xbwdv

On topic I'm not sure I'm as keen on Microsoft's press conference this year as the op.  In my opinion it was not as powerful or successful as 2008 or 2009, but that doesn't mean I think it was bad.

It's also a long road till Microsoft is competing with Nintendo sales wise I think.  We'll have to see the pricing on Kinect and how the software offerings resonate with consumers.  Nintendo has been able to stay ahead of thier game because the promise of the Wii-mote has been realized by some great games, and they have supported thier hardcore with traditional offerings.  It's a fine line to walk, we'll know in the coming years if Microsoft has the skill to walk it.

Top post.  Totally agree.  The biggest challenge for MS (and Sony) is the long shadow of Nintendo and the challenge of keeping their existing base happy while expanding - no easy task.

At least they were attached to cables.  I heard MS was just giving them away...
