They better come out with some serious s*** to compete with the 3ds is all i have to say.
| RolStoppable said: Well, darth, let's look at it from several angles. 1) The focus of the product Sony's typical approach is to combine games with multimedia features. Nintendo has an incredible strong first party when it comes to portable games while Sony had nearly nothing at all in the past almost six years. What carried the PSP was the third party support and that seems to have gone to Nintendo now too. Then there's Apple who doesn't only get third party support but also happens to have devices that are popular for their multimedia features. Sony is facing an uphill battle on both fronts and it's going to be even tougher in case they lose Monster Hunter to Nintendo as well. 2) The timing of the product The 3DS is going to launch this fiscal year which means that a possible PSP2 at the very best launches in the same timeframe. Sony has no chance to get a headstart with their product and even worse for them, the 3DS is garnering lots of attention for its 3D feature without the need for glasses and one of the most promising lineups in video game history. 3) Sony's game division is still struggling While the PS3 has rebounded since the Slim launch, it's still not out of trouble completely. The game division hasn't made a profit for a full fiscal year since a long time. R&D as well as games development for new hardware is extremely costly, not too mention the marketing needed for the launch and beyond. Now considering how hard it's going to be for Sony to compete against Nintendo and Apple, the question is if that investment is going to be worth it or if Sony is better off by focusing just on the home console space from now on. 4) 60m PSPs sold sounds impressive, but how much did Sony profit off of it? The handheld was sold at a (big) loss initially judging from Sony's financial reports. It always had problems to move software which is where most of the profits come from in the video games business. In the end the PSP might just have made a few hundred million $ for Sony. That doesn't sound too bad, but keep in mind that the PS3 and PSP were launched at a time when the PlayStation brand was at its peak. A PSP2 and PS4 won't benefit from getting all the third party support which will make it harder for Sony to move hardware in the next generation. What it comes down to is whether or not Sony's first party is capable of pushing two systems at the same time and if the PSP and PS3 are anything to go by, then the answer is no. Lastly, let me say that I would like to see Sony make a PSP2, because it's going to do more harm than good for them. |
This 100%
that is why i think Sony should just focus on there Hd console Ps3 and leave the handheld space to the king the Big N. No one has been able to take them down for the last 30 years.

With the 3DS coming I doubt they let it take charge. Chances are they already made a new one but delayed it because of the 3DS announcement. I'm waitng for Gamescom for the system or TGS.

You mean franchises like Metal Gear, Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy? Sony's in a tough spot in the handheld space. Nintendo has roped in Sony's 3rd party support and Apple has completely eclipsed the PSP as a convergence device and in digital distribution. I suspect kowenicki's right and Sony has gone back to the drawing board, because they need to find a third way that can differentiate themselves from these two mobile powerhouses. It's time for Sony to get a little crazy and some risks. Whatever they come up with will have to be something that nobody is thinking of right now. |
No I mean things like Patapon, Motorstorm, Locoroco and GT from Sony (to name just a few) and then Ace Combat, Final Fantasy, GTA and more. There are plenty of good games on PSP, my main problem is that when at home, the PS3 is always going to take precidence, so I have a large back log of PSP games to play

1. That's conjecture. The 3DS games are fact.
2. When is PSP2 launching and why should somebody who wants "playstation franchises" wait for it instead of buying those games on 3DS?

The are between a rock (iRange) and a hard place (3DS). The rock and the hard place are getting closer together and Sony at this point cannot compete with either one of them. So what can they do?
The best courses of action really are either surrender or retreat. They can either not release a PSP2 or release a PSP2 as an Android phone.

like i stated before and do what exactly?
right now the best option is to go for a PSP/smartphone
making a dedicated handheld game system would be a loose loose situation. just look at the market now..HOW much is the PSP software moving?
no way as near as much as the Iphone or the DS, now add into the fact the new 3DS you have at this point already at walmart for instance Sony's PSP is not on End cap's. it's being lambasted in the MEDIA an pretty much every gaming forum, no 2nd analog stick..like that would matter?
a 2nd analog stick is not going to increase PSP sales at this point. the better position is to keep what you have on the market the PSP as it is can download PSN content, which is where more of their content is goin to be place pretty soon the support for UMD along side of Digital download's will be dropped in support of complete digital download for all PSP's.
than move the PSP platform over to the Smartphone area, because there even though there is many smartphone's Sony does have 1st party dedicated PSP game's that could be used to seperate their smartphone from the rest of the other smartphones.
thus no longer having to worry about:
a) stocking UMD that pirate's were dumping thir content's anyway
b) do not have to worry about directly competeing with Nintendo in the handheld space but does indirectly compete..just like the Iphone currently does.
c) use a FREE OS that they then have access to their App's also that mean's more game's and non game app's.

Sure they will be on the PSP2 but by that time they will have already launched on 3DS, so surely that would hurt sales to the extent that they would only really be bought by the "Sony loyalists". Not sure how large a market this would be.

Depends on the "powah" of PSP2 and whether identical games can be launched on it from the 3DS.
But SONY can't make it too powerful as devs need to chose between making PS4/720 games or PSP2 games due to budget costs.
