Sony: PS Move Reaction Time Is 22 Milliseconds

Tuesday, 1 Jun 2010 - 15:32PM

In a community-based interview over on the official PlayStation website, Mark Green of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has said the reaction time for the PlayStation Move is just 22 milliseconds.

Reaction times have been spoken about a lot in recent times, and not just for Move, but Microsoft's Project Natal as well.

"So I can tell you that it is accurate to the nearest millimetre, precise in motion tracking and likewise in seeing where the controllers are in 3D space." said Green. "Its reaction time, from movement to delivering to the screen, is just 22 milliseconds and on screen it is pixel precise".

He added: "To put that in perspective the system is five times faster than that of a typical human’s reflexes!"

PlayStation Move is set to launch later this year, with a price still to be announced - though it has been confirmed the device will be less than $100. More will be shown at the E3 conference in just two weeks time.

This is pretty impressive. Does anyone know what the reaction time for the Wii Motion Plus is?

Thats quicker than human reaction time, so there should be no noticeable lag at all. Very impressive.

Lets hope its not too sensitive though. That can be annoying too at times.

60 FPS is almost possible without a lag

It would be a very good time, considering that the 60Hz sample rate of the camera by itself brings almost 17ms. It's close enough to normal controller lag that the input analysis would most likely not need extra frames (the usual target is about 100ms, or three frames at 30fps).

I'm not sure what he means, though, when he says "from movement to delivering to the screen". Is he talking of the pointing mode of the libraries, i.e. the intrinsic lag of screen coordinate readings?

Take those numbers with a pinch of salt, guys.

PS: I don't have any numbers for Motion plus. Without M , the Wiimote sends the numbers at more that 60Hz and its IR camera reads at 100Hz, so it's in the range of 10-17ms. Basically most latency you see in its use as pointer comes from the software elaborating those raw data and from the display latency.

WOW seems like playing socom4 with this will be more precise indeed.

darth it's around 10-20ms(varies) so ps move has done really well to his only 22ms response time considering it has augmented reality, also this is already posted in the official thread;);)

it's the future of handheld

Let's not get our hopes up! I'll believe it when I see it.

Good news, now if only the price of the product was much much lower. Unless Socom comes with it, I doubt I will pay $100 for it. (Given I paid $150 for Ace Combat and Flight Stick)

I hope this worth getting for the new Ape Escape.
