Forums - Gaming - Why were these FF7, FF8, & FF9 Remakes for PS2 Cancelled?

cause they got to know that they could wait a while and earn huge money out of it later and that there was no need then as they were already making good money on other games. They could save it for later to earn huge amounts of release them when the company is in danger

Perhaps because SE like all the remake hysteria....

Keeps FF and SE in the minds of gamers, even though they have no intention of ever releasing any.

Seconded.

Just like predicting huge (over the top) sales is just a marketing trick.

Instead of bothering with remakes, make up some new stories, alternate the old battle-systems and bring out an 'old school' cheap to produce FF game.

I don't mind playing sprites and watch some stunning CGI in between for example.

Make it 15 bucks on Psn, Live and Steam and bam... in come more millions

They have, its called Final fantasy: 4 Warriors of the Light & it did 'ok" in japan, not million

Ah how could i forget...

But actually i was referring to the console-side of FF's. And selling 230.000 copies does bring in millions... Any word on reviews for that game?

Not really but I was listening to this podcast, apparently the battle system is like FF13 but slower. I have no idea how that works. Otherwise it has a feeling of an old skool FF.

The amazon Japan reviews are good, most have given it 4 stars

http://www.amazon.co.jp/スクウェア・エニックス-光の4戦士-ファイナルファンタジー外伝/dp/B002GKBLNM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1274105113&sr=1-3

and on consoles they could do it, but I don't think they want to. By old school do you mean FF9 type? or just turn based?

I would love for them to port FFVII on the 3DS. I mean not a overhaul remake, but just a port. Keep all the pre-rendered backgrounds, CG cutscenes, and turn based battle but just update the character models so they won't look like Legos.

It would also serve as an apology to Nintendo fans for switching over to Sony.

A 3DS version of FF7 would be an absolutely perfect fit in my opinion. I would gladly buy that one.

I don't blame Square for jumping ship to Sony, Sony obviously had a greater financial interest in Square, and invested in the company (Nintendo didn't bother) and created hardware and a sales environment more suitable for the game. Nintendo went very exclusive and elitest, and as a result they had very little to offer on the N64 (and I mean quanitity here, I remember owning an N64 and considering each and every game thoroughly because only one game was released every month or two).

I agree.  I think hand helds are the place to do these old JRPG .

FFVII seems to be the one that people want to be redone the most.  I think it is the only one that would do well if released on a full console.  I don't think the market is there for VIII and IX, unless you put them on a handheld, as is.  Of course, if it doesn't take too much investment, releasing the old games on PSN or XBL is also not a bad idea.

I give this thread a 9.5.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

A combination of the two sounds just about right...

I think they have the ingredients to come up with more of the likes of the psx entries, even including the older ones actually. Nothing too big, just some good games to kill 30+ hours with. Sidequests, compelling story, tons of enemies and a couple of astonishing fmv's. Not making it into shovelware but, like in the 90's, there were some very excellent freeware games that amazed and were enjoyed by millions. I don't know how much money and time is needed for the creation of such a game but i do think that it could turn a profit.

Never change a winning team!

(oh crap... i'm really getting old and nostalgic here...i miss the 90's )

lol I don't really miss the 90's, apart from Tomb Raider & Crash Bandicoot.

Well, don't get me wrong: I would love to see FF8 and FF9 as well. The thing is I can pick up those two games and enjoy them just fine as they are; FF7 not so much. FF7 is a great game for the mid-90's, but it didn't really age well. FF7 could really shine if they knocked off the rust and gave it some nice new fresh components. I don't see how a remake experience of FF8 or FF9 could be as much improved over their originals.

I suppose FF8 could use a remake of the 3D characters since they do look kind of pixely when on the map, but it's not nearly as much as FF7 needs it.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

ah didn't see this thread before so here's my grain of salt:

PS2 BC ensures that people who wanted to play these games already did. (I personnaly played PE1-2, FFIX and a few other PS1 games on my PS2 (upped graphics or so I was told :p)).
Also the marginal increase of quality from 1 gen probably did not warrant the costs...
