One particularly controversal quote.
Daniel Erickson: Well, before I address the main point I just want to take a slightly more controversial route: You can put a 'J' in front of it, but it's not an RPG. You don't make any choices, you don't create a character, you don't live your character... I don't know what those are - adventure games maybe? But they're not RPG's.

Not really sure what he defines as a RPG, there's role playing where you create your own character, and others you're fit into with a very controlled story. Someone needs to play more D&D lol. I could make a Pirates of the Caribbean adventure, people would have to assume and act like the characters from the movies, and I could direct everything till the final battle with the Kraken, Davy Jones, and East India Trading company...
Though to be honest I've found some JRPGs to be more open in some cases, like you don't see many optional bosses that are way more powerful than the final boss in WRPGs often, and if WRPGs are all about choices then where is my choice in who I want to fight against, hell where is the option to fight along with the bad guys? Not there cause some form of structure is required to make a pretty solid story.
