What advantage would having a propriety format offer, if an alternative could prevent piracy?  The wii should be outselling the PS3 2:1 with software because that is it's hardware lead, but the wii only sells about 30% more software lately, so nintendo is leaving a LOT of money on the table that it could be acquiring.

I also see what you are saying about nintendo being aggressive with hardware but keep in mind that cost-wise you dont have to have a bleeding edge machine with blu-ray.  You could make something that is a bit less powerful than the 360 and still have a BD player for around $250 if you didnt require a huge HD.

Wow, I see. You are completely right about everything. Don't be too surprised if Iwata turns up at your door begging you to take his job, because you clearly know how to run the company better than him. Nintendo ALWAYS use proprietry storage. One of the main advantages of this, by the way is that it prevents piracy. The pirates have to deal with the new technology. And that's one of the reasons why Blu Ray is not pirated - it's simply not cost effective for hackers to crack blu ray, because it is still not very popular compared to dvd. Security through obscurity would not work for the leading console.

By the way, it has NEVER been the case that software sales are proportional to the hardware sales - the PS2 had a laughable attach rate compared to the GC and particularly the xbox. Also, basing anything off recent events is hilarious. Sony has had a lot of big software releases lately, Nintendo less so. You wouldn't like it if, on Super Mario galaxy 2 launch week I pointed out the ratio of Wii:PS3 software sales. So why would you do it to me?

I'm not so disbeleiving towards the idea of a WiiHD, I mean the Wii is getting manhandled by piracy, and it wouldnt be hard at all for nintendo to come up with a console in the $250 dollar range that also had a Blu-ray player.  The blu-ray disc, btw, has security features that make it a lot harder to rip games with.

Hopefully, the HD bandwagon will cut down on piracy.

So does the disc format which Nintendo has been using since the Gamecube. Only a very rare PC DVD-ROM unit can read them, and it takes hours to rip a raw image. How does cracking the disc format enable piracy of download-only titles? It doesn't, otherwise the Wii would be wide open before launch due to things learned from the Gamecube.

The reason it's all possible is because BroadOn's DRM is a pile of shit. These folks managed to extract all the encryption keys by bridging two pins on a chip with a pair of tweezers. In early Wii consoles, one of the authentication checks didn't even work properly.

I think that Sony would have better security on a product that it created for the long-term, sorry.

This is not the first time that Pachter has said that the PS3 Move is the WiiHD.

Another time I saw him predict that Wii owners would upgrade to this console. In that, he ignores the investment that would be required as well as the fact that half of American households still do not have HD.

I honestly wonder if those betting on motion controls for the HD consoles will be unpleasantly surprised that a great deal of the user base has no desire for such controls on their consoles.

According to Wikipedia
Total PlayStation 2 games shipped as of March 31, 2007: 1.24 billion
Total Nintendo GameCube games sold as of December 31, 2009: 208.57 million

According to VGChartz
Total PS2 Hardware Sales as of May 1, 2010: 136,090,613
Total GC Hardware Sales as of May 1, 2010: 21,515,337

So, the GameCube won't really have changed at all in the last 5 months, so the attach rate would be ~9.7
The PS2, even if it didn't sell a single game since the end of March 2007, would be at over 9.11.
Based on current weekly sales, the PS2 would have sold at least 30 million since then, but it was actually way higher. In the last 2 years, Sony have shipped ~100 million units of software.
I'd hardly say that the attach rate of the PS2 compared with the GC is "laughable". You should try not to exaggerate. According to VGC, original XBox sold ~168 million units of software. With hardware sales of ~24 million, that would be an attach rate of 7. Even the best figures I can find for XBox are 24m HW/230m SW, which would still only be around 9.6. Gamecube attach rate is 9.7?
