valkyrie chronicles. it just had a compelling story. it was a little emotional for me when i lost a character in the feild. and when isara died. the music went hand and hand with the game as it progressed through the story. thats why i gave it a 5 out of 5. everybody that i know that played it says the same thing when asked.

These are the Rpgs I've enjoyed regardless of any bugs or problems they may have.

Oblivion- I often feel like this game was made specifically for me, it has everything I love: fantasy, open world exploration, tons of swords and magic spells, decision making, and obviously tons of quests.

Borderlands- this game is just a ton of fun, levelling up is fun, collecting guns is fun, boss fights are fun.

Soma Bringer- Diablo with animmu characters, pretty cool story, different but interesting graphics for a DS game.

Dragon Quest V- one word, EPIC!!

Star Ocean The Last Hope- fun gameplay and battles, story is meh but I had fun with it which is what I care about.

Demon's Souls. Why? Because it's epic, hard, has co-op and PVP.

Demon's Souls

Why? Here it goes:
-Diablo2(hell) / Dmc4(DMD) feeling is back...(difficulty lvl)
-Co-op... if you are lucky to have a friend :P
-DS is a new form of testing your rage control... like no others i know
-It's painfull yet rewarding
-Demons/Skelotons/Dragons even "Death" with its minions...not to mention sadistic bosses.
-Atmosphere - you know you are going to die soon.

(Others on my favorites list are: Dragon Age,Oblivion, probably FF13(started playing today) )

Cheers from Norway :D

Tales of vesperia
Awesome battle system
great characters
above average story

1. Final Fantasy XIII (Fainaru Fantaji Shirteen for JPN speakers)-- Best battle system in an RPG ever haven't been this addicted since pokemon gold, amazing graphics/locales (sunleth waterscape FTW), my favorite characters & the way they interacted & were paired up was awesome, surprisingly good music even though Uematsu didn't do it, frocobo, Fascinating world/lore/myth & legends. I'm surprised I liked it for its gameplay more than its story which ends with a feeling of some minor lost potential.

2. Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion -- Huge open world with its side missions being the amazing part. DARK BROTHERHOOD FTW! The main story was awful but in this game it doesn't matter as you could sink 60 hours into it without doing much in the main story

3. Dragon Quest V Remake -- It blew me away, I never expected a DQ game to be this good, but its a classic. I liked almost everything about it!

4. The World Ends With You -- Fresh music, stunning, captivating gameplay, grippin story. What more can you want!

5. Yakuza 3 tied with Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor -- Both good at different things. Yakuza 3 rules for its FUN sidequests & other content. Devil Survivor for its amazing story that was full of twists & turns I couldn't imagine.

As a generation this has been good for me as I finally explored the RPG genre, instead of sticking with Pokemon/FF/KOTOR I got other games & found some gems that shocked me with their quality (DQV).

Others that missed the list -- SO4, DQIV, Dragon Age Origins

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

this is gonna sound like an odd choice but I'm going to say Chrono Trigger on the DS.

I never got to play this masterpiece when it originally came out (well I did and didn't like it, too young) but after finally completing it I can say WOW, great game, one that still stands up great today and easily one of the best games on the Nintendo DS.

I am not a heavy JRPG player (I see you ask for RPGs in general), but damn, Valkyria Chronicles was amazing. It was pretty easy though, and I felt that the game was stripped of all tactical combat because of this. The battle system was good, but it was very flawed, making it incredibly easy. However, the art style and story was pretty epic. Also this game is very special for me, since I was in a part of my life which I really miss. Nothing exciting happened, at all! I was pretty much just lying in bed waiting for my exchange program in Tokyo, but I have many memories surrounding this trip and it's preparations when I think of Valkyria Chronicles.

Oh, and it made me cry a couple of times, but I guess I'm kind of soft. I mean, I cry when I listen to the music composed by Joe Hisaishi ^^

My other favourite so far would have to be a new one, that I just got and haven't played too much because my finals are coming up. But I found Resonance of Fate to be highly interesting in story (ambiance, characters), design (environments, graphics in general) and battle system (complicated, but very rewarding).

So I guess all I can say is: GO SEGA!!!!!

Since I haven't played a great amount of RPGs I'm gonna say Rune Factory Frontier. The whole farming thing was new to me and how they mixed it with the fighting elements was great. I wanted to grow everything I could possibly grow, make everything i could possibly make. It was a close choice with Oblivion and King's Bounty Armored Princess.
