Sure there are SOME shitty perverted guy only games, but there would be shitty perverted girl only games if there was an audience for it. If you feel that strongly about it, there are readily available ratings for games, and you can easily read them, and avoid sexual content or explotative behaviour.

In fact, a lot of the "explotative" scenes in videogames are from real life. For example, in GTAIV, you can go to a strip club. However, in real life you can go to a strip club. If a criminal couldn't visit a strip club, the game would feel fake and censored.

I don't think you should try to censor stuff you aren't going to buy anyway, just my 2 cents. If there is an audience for it, and it's not hurting anyone, let em have it. Games aren't public domain like television or radio, and they could go much farther than they do it if weren't for the "games are for kids" stigma, which more censorship would further propogate.

This isn't unique to video games. The exact same thing happens in movies and tv (most genres anyway, certain action, horror, sci-fi - all the 'guy genres'). It also happens in the music industry, most female singers get 90% of their kit off tastelessly and without context  in their video clips because they will lose their record deal if they dont.

Theatre is about the only genre where this isn't commonplace (inb4 broad generalisations as to the sexual orientation of theatre patrons)

This is an ancient argument. 

Women in games are no more unrealistic in there portrayal than how the male characters are.  Take a look at the Gears of War III scans. You have to go to a game like Bayonetta to find the equivalent of that in female design.

People just like idealized representations of characters.  Strong and heroic for men, sensual and beautiful for women.  If you want to see the opposite, go walk down the street.  Not a pretty sight.

Hell, hell if I was in charge, all video game girls would look Ivy from Soul Calibur.

Anyway, I don't fully agree. True, some are over-sexualized but there are only a few overkills. Most aren't that bad though they're definitely not depicted realistically either. And just like it's been said many times already, men aren't usually any better in games. Also, what's really bugging me is how shallow characters, male or female, are in games. Recently I've started to mind this more, even to the degree where it really annoys me. But them we might come to the question whether over-sexualized characters can have a deep personality and be beliavable at the same time.

Overall, it somewhat is a problem but I don't think it's that big.

Is it a good cultural message? No. But the problem is a widespread element of our current cultures. Look at movies, music, etc. As Zen notes, sex sells and will be used accordingly.

You're all forgetting Alyx Vance (she kicks arse, is an intelligent and great engineer too, and all with a normal amount of clothing!)... and what about Samus Aran who's all covered up? The characters are there.

Don't worry I don't say strong and not sexualised women doesn't existe. I like Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield from Resident Evil. But they a lot of Female Protoganiste archetype that doesn't even exist like the two guy a mention above but in women. Full amored girl is rare , in MMORPG it's often like this for women.

If the guy was sometime sexualised in video game I would less complain. Like imagine Dante meet Nero the first time and say something like

Dante : You seem strong ... and sexy

Nero : wut ?

That would be more equal and hummm ... special?
