I think we could see a vast split from various sites this year, because there are so many great games but more importantly those games are so diverse. Someone who really "gets" Mass Effect 2 is going to disregard anything else, much like those who "get" Halo and GT, 3D Mario, full Zelda, an awesome new twist on Metroid, the sites that worship the ground on which Team ICO walks, and even those who have a fascination for Fable 3

 

January will be a vicious season for fanboy wars, because there will be no debate about the merits of these games, but a broader clash of gaming values. Those who favor story, art style, straight graphics tech, online multiplayer, straight gameplay, and then the question of what kind of story. It all falls out.

GOTY awards, from most to least:

1. Mass Effect 2
2. Starcraft 2
3. Alan Wake
4. God of War 3
5. Red Dead Redemption

Mario Galaxy 2 has an outside chance to break top 5, I'm not sure about it yet.

Zelda and Lost Guardian won't come out in 2010.

GOTY thread at an early May - priceless.

So far the serious GOTY contenders (meaning that they actually have a shot):

Mass Effect 2
God of War 3

Upcomming titles with the potential:

Starcraft II (best rts bitches!)
Halo Reach (can't screw this up, it's Halo)
Alan Wake (pretty sure this game will be meta AAA)
Red Dead Redemption ("black horse", hope so, but doubt it)

But there may be many unannounced titles, or titles without release date. (TLG / sequels to successful new IP's)

I don't believe that any Nintendo title have a real shot at GOTY. SMG2 is SMG 1.5 and while great, not revolutionary anymore. Metroid looks interesting, but also not revolutionary. Maybe Zelda has a chance to spice things up, but it's too far down the road to even speculate about it.

well the popular goty i think will be the new zelda imo,

twilight princess was just a gamecube game, new zelda will be wii specific with a full dvd to use, so my bet is zelda



...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

most likely zelda.... other than that GT5???
Mass Effect 2 and GOW3 won't get GOTY since its released so early in the year.
Zelda , GT5 and Halo Reach will (hopefully) be released in the 4th quarter
and get loads of GOTY praises and hype.

My guess for most likely to be nominated consistently

-Mass Effect 2
-Super Mario Galaxy 2
-Zelda Wii (if it releases)
-GT5
-God of War III

Will likely get some nominations but not as many as those
-Alan Wake
-Fable 3
-Metroid: Other M
-Red Dead Redemption
-The Last Guardian (if it releases)

Has a chance to get a nomination or two
-Bioshock 2
-Final Fantasy XIII (probably not from the bigger places)
-Heavy Rain
-Battlefield 2
- A lot of other not yet released or announced games that will be out at the end of the year.

I think if Epic Mickey and The Last Story turn out really well they could be dark horses. Other than that i'd say Mass Effect 2, GOW3, GT5, TLG, Zelda, M:OM, and SMG2 all have a chance.
