Forums - Sony - My PS3 has died, but it's not exactly the YLOD... *confused*

As I've already said, my PS3 only turns itself on and off while pressing and holding the power button for some reason, most likely due to the problem it has.

And try a different tv, just to be sure

Sounds like he's saying he's getting no video output at all.

Either the GPU is fried (usually shows up as video defects: heavy green and pink pixelation/distortion in the worst case, light pink and green pixels of "snow" with lesser problems) or your video port(s) is out.

It's improbable both video ports went out simultaneously, so if both your HDMI port and your multi out port are not working, the video controller is out.

If you buy a slim before selling your old unit, you'll be able to recover your save data via console to console transfer.

I have tried a different TV and different cables, both haven't solved my problem. All I get is a black screen, that's it.

About the console to console transfer... As I understand it, both consoles must be in working order for it to function, since I would also need to input commands on the "old" console. Mine isn't working (since only having the fans rotating and a green light lit isn't really working) so it's a no go.

Having never used console to console data transfer, I couldn't comment on how it actually works. The info is readily available online though.

I made the assumption the new console could access the old console's data in slave mode (as though it were an external HDD), which would make quite a bit of sense for a new console that was replacing an old, potentially broken console.

Before you buy a new console, remove the Hard Drive and connect it to your computer with an external case or the appropriate cables and see if the PC can detect it as functioning properly. It's possible the hard Drive is fried which if that is the case means you can't keep your saves.

Also the ps3 can have issues using a standard TV after using an HD tv. but since you've tried to reset it, I doubt thats the issue.

HDMI carried sound and video, so a lost port would likely lose both, it's not like VGA as someone else suggested where you get magenta and green pixelation. Try the other video out port, maybe the hdmi has failed, if this is the case you can at least copy saves in sd mode.

If you can't get any video at all either the GPU is sending corrupt data or the Hard Drive is faulty.

If there was internal fried parts it would most likely ylod because the ps3 detects errors. Thats why I think something like a port of HDD is just broken and not the cpu/gpu

Remove the HDD and then try powering on with the power button held.

certainly something fried, but it would be hard pinpoint what, at least it's turning on so isn't the powerp supply that's harder to repair

The author of the new method posted by Gilgamesh http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=107840&page=1#, says that it works to fix both YLOD and GLOD (green light of death) where everthing seems to works correctly but you have no displays on screen.

GLOD??? another thing for me to worry about.....
