You have a party of 6 pokemon. And that is your team.

As for the question about trading.
When I was a kid, everyone traded pokemon with each other, and it was a huuuuuge part of the game experience since it was so social. People aslo battled against each other a lot. I always battled my brother after we had beaten a gym in our repective games, like a real life rival xD
So yes, trading (and battling) with people increases the fun of the games exponentially. However, in the state that the series is currently in, it would be hard to trade and battle with people nowadays.

You should try playing pokemon. The games have a kiddy stigma on them, but the gameplay goes beyond age. The first playthrough is always the most memorable. Catching your first wild pokemon, watching them evolve for the first time, beating that pesky first gym leader, it's great fun.

Why is it hard to trade/battle Pokemon now? And how does one 'trade' with someone else?

It's hard because less people play pokemon. You used to trade by hooking up to Game Boy Color to each other, and today you trade by using the DS wireless connection. I don't know anyone besides me who still play pokemon anymore, so unless Nintendo have incorporated some kind of online arena/trading center, I can't trade/battle anymore :(

Looking at the sales of the latest games I'd have thought the amount of people playing Pokemon was pretty steady. Perhaps it's newer/younger kids just getting into the game as some of the older players phase out of it, is that kinda what you mean?

I guess that's what I mean. But I rarely see any kids playing pokemon either. But I can't really see what's going on everywhere in the world so...

Well I know my nephew is still crazy about Pokemon. It's actually the reason we got him a DS (well, DSi). He had pretty much burned through his GBA playing Pokemon games, and he really, really wanted to try the DS games out. So Pokemon and Zelda. And I told him about the Black & White versions coming, and now he's all ramped up for them as well.

Pokemon rules - it's impossible to be too old for Pokemon :)

I'm pretty lucky in that Pokemon seems to be the latest thing that everyone cool has got to be playing (and yes, I am in year 10 xD).

I have never played a Pokemon game, I think people kind of understand my preferences (I'm an RPG guy) would you all suggest me picking one of these up? (After I finish TWEWY of course )

Play Pokemon Red first, because even though it sucks, it's amazing.

Then Crystal because it's basically Gold + Silver + =O

Then Emerald for pretty much the same reason as above.

And my opinion ends there, because I don't have a DS.

Pokemon Red and Blue destroyed all of their sequels in sales; it's definitely going down in popularity. But just the fact that it's been able to survive for this long, with so many changes and overcomplications, is a testament to its quality.

I don't think Pokémon is anywhere near as popular now as it was ten years ago.

Well I'd agree that Pokemon as a series should be commended for staying so popular so long, even if it is on the wane...

They do, the Global Trade Station where you can search for pending offers or make an offer. The trading doesn't happen live, you deposit the pokemon when you make an offer, the person who accepts the offer makes the trade, then you pick up the pokemon they traded for.
