 Compared to what MS has lost on the Xbox over the last 7 years, Sony isn't hemmoraging anything. MS isn't in that much better shape to offer a price cut if they ever want earn back the $5 billion plus they've already lost. Sony has barely suffered a paper cut. On top of that, Sony as a company is still making a profit, so I don't think they're too worried at this early stage in the game. No doubt this Christmas is important for all the companies, but the fact of the matter is that we still have probably 4-5 years left in this generation. 


Do you understand the Microsoft is considerably bigger then sony and can easily take these hits with their reserve cash. When MS lost the most money i heard they maybe lost 1/6 of their profit (big) but sony is lost almost HALF of their profit from the ps3.

If HD DVD gains support this christmas i would be pretty danm worried if i was sony.

Microsoft is bigger than sony, that is true(its the only company bigger than SONY). But, the reason they joined these console wars was too stop sony from getting to BIG. Sony was going everywhere, to every single type of technology available they were at the top with the top selling HD TV'S, cameras, and what not. At one point they were making more profit than microsoft (when they came into the computer buisness).

 

If the PS3 was allowed to win this gen again, then sony might have gained triple the amount of money they got from the ps2. Thats why XBOX was made. To stop sony from getting TO BIG.

That is a BIG if my friend. The way the PS3 is selling tells you that blu ray is here to stay. HD DVD, not so much.

Jman, you smoking on that ROCK?!? Did you just make all that info up about SONY and its profits and it being almost as big as MS, and all that? I know you couldn't have had any fact behind any of those statements, so I am just wondering if you made that up to try and deceive??

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Microsoft's price cuts haven't run as deep as Sony's have.  That said, I'm fairly impressed that the PS3 is outselling the 360 primarily because it *is* still more expensive and has many fewer top exclusive games as well as games overall.  I can't help but wonder whether or not that's due to the strength of the playstation brand or if it's due to people becoming more aware of the 360 reliability issue not yet being fixed.

According to my math the lowest priced PS3 at launch was $500, now the lowest price is $400. Also the highest price was $600 and is now $500.  So ~20% is the new 33%?

Well, in Europe it was in fact 33%, in less than 1 year (7 months approximately?).
