Forums - Microsoft - Is the RROD problem gone in newly produced consoles?

In nearly every thread concerning the 360, someone eventually says that they'd likely never buy a Xbox 360 due to the RROD problem.

It is obvious that it's a very big problem with older consoles, but right now, isn't it more important to look at the newly produced consoles and see if the problem is still there? If it isn't, the RROD problem can be safely forgotten by everyone who doesn't have a 360 yet (at least by the time that the old units are cleared out of the retail channel, which has either already happened or should happen very soon).

I havent heard anything by now. Maybe next time someone posts the "Today it happened to me" thread, he could detail when exactly he got his machine. And maybe what type it is (Serial number, anything like that)

I don't think so. Did MS even admitted the problem to be related to heat or manufacturing process?

I personally saw a 360 go bad right from a cold start so I doubt that the new process alone will make anything different. Also I have a friend that got an Arcade RRoD on him in a week (as soon as he put in Mass Effect, rofl). Aren't the arcades supposed to have the new CPU chips?

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

It seems pretty obvious that it's heat related considering that repairs appear to consist in adding heatsinks.

Regarding the Arcade, I have no idea. I'd imagine that by now we'd have seen thousands of doom and gloom OMG articles if it was proven that the RROD was a problem in new consoles.

My understanding is a prolonged exposure to excessive heat waped the motherboard. Once that happened it is a ticking time bomb.

The new consoles(I think everything produced since Halo 3 with the HDMI cable) have the improved heatsink and the new 65nm CPU. What they are lacking a 65nm GPU which is in development and should show up next year. I think we have seen the end of the issue but the GPU puts out more heat so we may not be out of the woods until next year.

Rumor has it the 65nm GPU and 45nm CPU will be out next year. So anyone who absolutely does not want to take a chance can get one next Christmas.

For me I am still trying to decide if the PS3 or 360 will be my end of generation purchase. I usually choose one console at launch and then near the end I pick up another one on the cheap will all the good games. The 360 is winning at this point.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

I would never buy an xbox360

Wii360??

wiiStation is the better choice =DD

My friend bought the xbox360 last Christmas and it just died when he bought Mass Effect.

He fix the problem by wrapping a Towel around it...It work

There will be RRoD problems for the new 360's. But it won't be as widespread.

Quack!

I'll bet my avatar and a 1 month ban that the PS3 by March 08 will be 3 Million units away in WW sales of the Wii. konnichiwa, Your gonna regret this!!!!!!

Rumor has it that they finally changed that crap X-clamp design in the new mobo designs, which was the main cause of RRoD. Between that, 65nm CPUs, and additional heatsinks, I think the red rings will slowly fade into memory.

Well, in theory. Let's hope that MS doesn't keep this crap up for an entire generation.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

Problem for MS is even if it's fixed we'll all be hearing about people having RRoD issues for months or maybe years to come and since we won't know how old the 360 was in most cases it gives the appearance of still being a 'current' problem.

Only way out is a total recall, and only then if the RRoD is fixed for good.
