My understanding is a prolonged exposure to excessive heat waped the motherboard. Once that happened it is a ticking time bomb.
The new consoles(I think everything produced since Halo 3 with the HDMI cable) have the improved heatsink and the new 65nm CPU. What they are lacking a 65nm GPU which is in development and should show up next year. I think we have seen the end of the issue but the GPU puts out more heat so we may not be out of the woods until next year.
Rumor has it the 65nm GPU and 45nm CPU will be out next year. So anyone who absolutely does not want to take a chance can get one next Christmas.
For me I am still trying to decide if the PS3 or 360 will be my end of generation purchase. I usually choose one console at launch and then near the end I pick up another one on the cheap will all the good games. The 360 is winning at this point.
Final* Word on Game Delays:
The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.
Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.
Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.
