Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo faces a dangerous piracy threat

Apparently there's a device called the R4 which is being sold openly in Japanese stores.  Not only that but the cost of the device puts it in the price range of even the most casual gamer.  It'll be interesting to see what Nintendo does to combat this since the device itself is apparently not strictly illegal in Japan (at least according to the article).

Read the article again, Legend.

This might kill DS software sales.

That's really nothing considering that people can already buy flash carts from Amazon , not to mention the ten zillion other very obvious websites out there.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

Leo-j: No it won´t.

Read the article again, guys.

It is illegal as soon as you own it, it isn´t sold in Japanese stores (but rather in online stores) and Nintendo said "we cannot smash them all", not "we can´t do anything".

The article because it clearly states in the very first sentence that it's being sold in Japanese stores.

How does this tie into your "Wii is killing gaming" theory?

It still doesn´t say it is sold.

with R4, M3, CycloDS or others thinks like that you can play emulators (NES, SNES, Mega Drive, Atari), you can play .avi videos, downloaded imported games, run user-created programs, etc... PSP have a firmware that can do this too.
They should enable this features (run 3th part programs) by default, so R4 would be usefull only for piracy, with is a good argument for banning it.

Consoles are worthless without unlock devices, they just play games...
