Forums - Sales Discussion - "Playstation" software sales ratio...

@Dallinor: With it's install base, every games release should have the similar numbers to those you just said.
In Europe PS2 software propably have a lot bigger share than what it has in NA or Japan.
But i have to admit, that the PS3:s shelf space seems to be running smaller, at least what i have been noticing. It propably will take some time for it to reach the Gamecube level.

I don't think so bdbdbd. This PS2 has been around for 7 years. After time consumers interest fades, more advanced products hit the market etc. So it's software sales are understandably going to decline over time. The fact however, that all the next gen of systems have already arrived, yet the PS2 can still sell a quarter of a million copies of one game in a single week, is phenomenal.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect all games released on a 7 year old console to be in the 200k range.

Regarding Europe, in some European countries the PS2 sells hardware but not much software because it's so easy to pirate PS2 software. I don't know if that's the case in USA and Japan too.

If the overall average for the PS3/PS3/PSP is 26.7%, what is the overall average for the DS, 360, and Wii?

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

@shams

Why dont you compare the ps3 and wii software ratios? Im more than certain the ps3 has a higher attach ratio. Also how can you expect the ps2 to have a 40% attatch ratio if it sold 130million, and only a couple of games surpassed the 10 million mark whcih isnt even a 10% attach ratio.

PS3 vs wii

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

wii: 40M

@Dallinor: Yes, but PS2 is still "alive", and has bigger install base than all the current gen consoles (including handhelds) combined. Well, of course this was about NA and Japan, where the situation isn't as described. You see, it shouldn't matter if the game gets it's release on PS2, if it's good. But definately the early adopters of games, have moved forward from PS2. Leaving only the "casual" crowd playing PS2.

@Zackblue: This topic isn't about ratios, it's about market share. Idea is, that 50% of consoles in the market, which still gets games, are Playstation branded, but marketshare in software is much lower. But maybe comparing console sales and games sales would be more interesting. @Sinha: LOL

From PSP there is no surprise that software sells stink as eugene pointed out Sony has advertised it as the next cool gadget and has very seldom used advertising for it's games. PS3 unfortunetly suffers from the same fate. Sony made such a big deal about what it can do with it's Hardware that the games suffer a bit. I also believe that the mass market would wait for the games to be marked down. The PS2 suffers from the fact that every Gamestop (At least in my area) has taken out the New Games and replaced them with Prev. Played Games .

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

It´s not correct the way you calculate these ratios. You can´t take the following titles in your calculation:

Wii Sports (free copy with Wii) ~ 254.000 in the week of Nov. 17th.

Forza 2 (free copy with Xbox 360) ~ 138.000 in the week of Nov. 17th.

Marvel (free copy with Xbox 360) ~ 134.000 in the week of Nov. 17th.

Wii Play (free copy with Wii Controller) ~ 131.000 in the week of Nov. 17th.

Motorstorm (free copy with PS3) ~ 33.000 in the week of Nov. 17th.

If you leave these titles out then the marketshare for Sony will be 31% with the PS2/PS3/PSP. Nintendo with the Wii/DS/GC/GBA will have a marketshare of 39%. Microsoft with the Xbox 360/Xbox will have a marketshare of 30%. These figures are for the week ending Nov. 17th.

These figures were dramatically different with the release of Halo 3 and will change dramatically with the release of titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Metal Gear Solid 4 as well.

Bottomline: These figures are not interesting at all. On the other hand total software/total hardware ratio's per system are interesting.

Wii Play costs $10 even with the Wii Controller price factored in. Wii Sports is not packed in Japan.

Also, what about packs such as PS3 starter pack in Europe?

Edit: Anyway, we had this argument for a long time on this forum everytime there's some kind of software count, there's really no point in it.

Edit2: And Welcome to the forums, hope you sustain long enough here to get by without being burned too much.

I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.

Currently playing: Super Smash Brothers Brawl(Wii), Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer(DS), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS), WiiFit(Wii)

Games Recently Beaten: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Normal; Very Hard after the next DLCs become available)

1 word: RTFA

@edjevink: actually no matter what numbers we use and how, we still can have similar arguments against the statistics.
Since counting in Wii Sports isn't ok, you propably have an estimation, that how many games would have been sold without Wii Sports being bundled?
Wii Play doesn't come free with remote, there's a price diffence.
Forza 2 & Marvel, since these games are available only as bundled software, and you can't get 360 without these games, check the part "Wii Sports".
Motorstorm, check "Forza 2 & Marvel".

And this bundle must mean we can't count Halo 3:
