Forums - Sales Discussion - Final Fantasy XIII is a MAJOR flop on the 360 - we need to talk about it

FINALYYYY... the forums have been getting quite boring lately... some geodude hacking ps3's to stop the evil sony enterprise from catching them all. Some Hideous monster ruining the metal gears on his bandwagon. and the engine on the boxcar not maxing out it's capabilities..

a good thread for once, thank you rol

Most likely the PS3s smaller userbase and the handheld dominance is affecting sales for the game more than people realize.

Or the fact that the game just isn't very good is affecting sales. This is the worst-reviewed FF in modern memory for a reason.

A games 'quality' doesn't always affect its sales overall.  Especially a major game that is this hyped and frontloaded.  'Quality' is opinion based, but time and time again as we've seen, a game can sell well simply based on tons of advertising.  And people see that advertising for weeks (and in the case of FFXII, years) before actually playing the game.  And the VAST majority of the games sales for both Japan and America came in the first couple weeks, which couldn't allow people to be affected by negative hype.

And all those people who bought the game and returned it still count as a sale.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Final Fantasy is a lot of things, but it can sell well no matter the platform.

Quality doesn't always affect sales, but sometimes it does. I think this is one of the cases where it has. I've talked to a lot of people who have played and enjoyed FFs in the past but who have no intention of buying XIII. They all say the same thing: I hear it's not very good, I hear they took out towns, I saw a stupid commercial with some chick singing.

XIII has a really bad reputation. It's partly reviews, partly the fact that the game has alienated a lot of more tuned-in fans who then badmouth it to their friends. Whatever it is, it's a major problem for Squenix, and they're going to need to make sure it doesn't happen again.

500 K =/= Flop FF TOTAL 1.3 MILL NA Most ever by a FF first month

While the legs will probably suck

no part of this was a flop

a big first first month doesn't mean anything,it the game sales drop dead after that.

and we are talking about Final Fanatasy,one of the few eite franchises out there.Comparing to that level,it was a flop not only on 360 but also on PS3

Hey guys,

I thought we need to talk about this:

Final Fantasy XIII sold 493,900 copies in March, according to NPD numbers. It was only 26 days on the market (so not for the whole five week period covered), but 493k is not much anyway for such a high profile release that was heavily hyped and advertised. Let's be honest here, this is a MAJOR flop. Not even the typical 360 legs for big hardcore games will turn this game into a success.

This could have an impact on other Square-Enix games, like Final Fantasy Versus XIII, coming to the 360.

So can we still say JRPGs won't sell on the 360? Let's check VGC numbers:

  • Blue Dragon --> 0.54 million
  • Tales of Vesperia --> 0.49 million
  • Final Fantasy XIII --> currently at 1.09 million, but obviously overtracked. 0.90m or 0.89m is probably right. Pitiful sales considering that we are talking about a main series Final Fantasy game here.

Just for comparison, the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.5m in week one in Japan alone.

Now for those who might not be in the know, this is another parody of my favorite hit and run thread ever made here on VGC. I've written one before, I've told someone else to use that fantastic title for a thread, the source material is just that awesome in my opinion.

The thing with sarcasm is that you have to use it moderatly or it really starts to look like attention whoring...........

After a while this type of post doesn't even make me chuckle anymore...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

How is it a flop yet. It has the highest FF numbers month 1

month 2 hasn't happend yet. You can guess that the second month will flop, or trend, but you can't call it a flop yet.

See, some of my friends think it's the best final fantasy since FF8. So, I don't see you your friends > my friends.

 Most of the peopel I talked to was excited of it because of the bad perception of 12

and I will agree the reviews were lower

But also to attribute is JRPG sales have been lacking this generation as well.

But month 1 FF13 is the highest grossing FF ever. Month 2 I think it will drop off considerably and won't reach 10 or 7 levels. I don't see why at a minimum it wouldn't reach 9 and 12 levels when price drops come into effect etc.
