You do realize that you said Playstation was larger than Nintendo, right? You don't get to pull the "playstation family" bit while separating Nintendo's fair that way after a line like that. More, the DS alone has outsold all current-gen Playstation platforms combined.

And no, I meant since the NES, particularly in th states - not as a measure of raw sales but as a brand identity which shaped pop culture in the 80's.

The idea that Playstation right now is bigger than Nintendo is indefensible.

When people say they will play Wii, they don't say "Let's go play Nintendo Wii!"... They simply say "Let's go play Wii!".

Same goes for DS. I even still hear people call the DS a Gameboy ¬_¬

And it doesn't matter that the DS has outsold the PS3 and PSP. The PS2 is still there, still selling and STILL very, very well known WORLDWIDE.

The bolded made me lol. Are you suggesting that the PSone/PS2 didn't greatly "shape pop culture" in the 90's/00's? Seriously? The PS brand dominated gaming for over a decade.

Even a bunch of Nintendo fans admit that the PS brand is still the biggest.

What you hear has little to do with the actual state of things and the state of brands! Nintendo brand recognition is only about 20% behind Sony as an entire company. The state of Nintendo's brand is one of the most valuable in the entire world! The playstation brand by itself does not compare, and things you hear from a guy have diddly to do with it.

The DS hasn't just outsold the PSP and PS3 combined (though yes, this matters quite a lot). In the timeframe since late-year 2004 it has outsold the PS3, the PSP, and the PS2, combined! Once we include the Wii (because you included the Nintendo name here, and yes, the Wii is part of the Nintendo brand and contributes to Nintendo's brand value) it becomes even more of a bizarre one-sided ostracization of the Playstation family whereby the defense of their continued relevance in comparison to the Nintendo brand becomes more and more an exercise in futility.

I don't care what Nintendo fans think! Contrary to what one may think, the opinions of people on video game message boards have dick all to do with larger scopes of brand name value and recognition!

And yes, I'm suggesting that individual games had more to do with the dominance of "Playstation culture" than the Playstation name itself, whereas that was not true with the NES in the 80's.

microsoft will never win a generation while japan and europe exist.

it will be a tough fight between nintendo and sony, if nintendo fitness games remain popular and sony can't find their own of course.

I think what i hear and see has a lot to do with things actually. Like i said, if the Nintendo name was more well known, i would see and hear more about it from people and on the TV, in Movies, in Music... Not just "a guy".

When people talk about the Wii, they don't talk about Nintendo. They simply talk about "Wii". While the Wii is part of Nintendo... They don't immediately think "Nintendo". When they think PS... They straight think and know "PlayStation". They straight up dominated for over a decade, the very same decade where gaming became mainstream worldwide.

And as for the bolded. If those games made the PS name popular, it doesn't really matter... As the PS brand still became the largest in gaming. SO i don't see your point at all.

All right. I see. You are making me get Socratic.

You hold that the Playstation brand is the biggst in gaming?

Nintendo has a face: Mario/Zelda/Pokemon etc...

Playstation has another: It's not gran turismo. It's power. Since the PS2 - remember the hype of the thing? That it could lauch terrorist nuclear missiles??? - it has always been power. For most people the PS2 was more powerful than the Xbox and Gamecube - it was a Sony product after all, for the coolest of the coolest kids - an object of desire! Imagine Gran Turismo on a not so powerful system being released today... it would sell nothing. A Mario game on the wii still sells like hot cakes. But the Playstation needs that power.

It's been good for sony so far, but power is becoming very expensive, and next gen it'll be the same if not worse. So it'll be harder and harder for sony to keep that power, to be the most powerful console out there. Not only they'll have the competition, but they lack the money now.

So... they better hope they find their Mario, because... next gen they'll probably not be perceived as the most powerful console of all.

the best casual and affordable gaming system will dominate. innovation could play a factor too but whoever wins will need to stand out among the other 3

the wii dominates sales because of the affordable price, casual games and innovative controller.

the wii dominates because of the casual appeal. the casual market is much larger than the hardcore.

games for the whole family, educational software and exercise software also help sales a lot

360 and ps3 are splitting hardcore sales right now because the graphics have little difference and the game libraries are 90% similar to each other.

There is one thing carl doesn't seem to get, just because the NAME Playstation is bandied around, doesn't mean the name Nintendo isn't in people's minds. Just because people say "lets go play the Wii" doesn't mean they don't know who it's made by ... they know full well it's Nintendo and so the brand name is there.

Playstation was a huge brand, heck it still is, but it just isn't what it used to be compared to Xbox (in the west) and Nintendo (WW)

Anyway that's my take on it, I think Carls argument is ridiculous.

Seece, since this thread is about brand power, sales, etc...what do you think MS could do to make the Xbox brand more appealing in continental Europe?....this gen MS has performed far better with the 360 than with the original Xbox in the territory, in the UK (where you live) it´s a favorite against the PS3, but it still doesn´t have the "Playstation appeal" in continental Europe..one of the apparent reasons I heard (dunno if it´s true) is Europeans prefer playing on PC if they have a choice, so the 360 sharing many titles with the PC would be a weakness in that regard...any truth to that?
