Nintendo has a face: Mario/Zelda/Pokemon etc...
Playstation has another: It's not gran turismo. It's power. Since the PS2 - remember the hype of the thing? That it could lauch terrorist nuclear missiles??? - it has always been power. For most people the PS2 was more powerful than the Xbox and Gamecube - it was a Sony product after all, for the coolest of the coolest kids - an object of desire! Imagine Gran Turismo on a not so powerful system being released today... it would sell nothing. A Mario game on the wii still sells like hot cakes. But the Playstation needs that power.
It's been good for sony so far, but power is becoming very expensive, and next gen it'll be the same if not worse. So it'll be harder and harder for sony to keep that power, to be the most powerful console out there. Not only they'll have the competition, but they lack the money now.
So... they better hope they find their Mario, because... next gen they'll probably not be perceived as the most powerful console of all.
