yes i can see it being a hit for sure, but i just hate to watch people get too into things like this.

It's like every time i see my friend playing Diablo 2, which he has been playing for 6 years now.  I remember completely wasting an entire summer when the game first came out, and i never want to get stuck in something like that again.

i prefer to play games that either have more clear goals (or end), or games that require a lot of skill to master (warcraft 3, Counter-strike).

It's nothing against PS3, but i just hate to see video games continue to go in this direction.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

What i think people are forgetting/ignoring/not acknowledging is that if Sony can even MARGINALLY pull this off in the long run the PS3 is going to dominate.  With HOME, if its even 3/4 as good as it appeard on GDC, we are talking the sims that people have always wanted....go check out sims sales worldwide, and this immersive sims environment will be FREE.  Then, we have the BD market.  If the current trend continues (I think after pirates and the spiderman movies are released we will see for sure) and if BD ends up as the format for future HD movie watching, that is one more group or feature that people get with their PS3.  Then there are the games, regardless of cross console games, Sony can differentitate itself simply with Home, free online services and its BD player there will be plenty of quality games as well, DMC, MGS, FF, Lair, The Show.....

Its incredibly ambitious, the PS3.  But we are starting to see Sonys plan, IMO.  Home, BD, playstation brand....i can see it fold out successfully, if Home goes according to plan and BD pulls through....and i can see it fail, Home gets no support from game DEV's and it doesnt drive PS3 sales enough for devs to see the benefit of putting time into it....but my goodness, if they pull this off, we might be looking back on this first year and kicking outselves for not trusting that they knew what they were doing.....or we will look back and say wow, we could see they were stupid why couldnt they, lol.

But in the end, regardless of whether th PS3 is for you (home, BD, games) one cannot ignore the appeal it will have for far more people than any other console, potentially in the end.

On the flipside, Home could be disasterous. Sony also managed the trainwreck otherwise known as Star Wars Galaxies. From the screen shots and demos the game look liked it was going to be great. Even the beta went pretty well and got good reviews.

But Sony turned what should have been a guaranteed success into a bastion of ill will. They treated their customers like dirt. Lying about upgrades. Unfulfilled promises. Horribly unstable servers that needed rebooting every night. Releasing unfinished code. Complete lack of customer service. And at the time it was the most expensive mmorpg as well.

I acknowledge some of the potential, but I am fully sure that Sony themselves will be the ones to fail to utilize that potential.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

I could be a dick and post links to the dozens of online communites that have existed since the late 90s but I won't. The fact is that there is a dedicated following for services like this but they do not attract that much attention from the general public.

That was SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) which is a different division than the PS3 one.  I hadn't heard anything like SOE being the one in charge of Home but I don't really have any info on it.

Who knows, but building a massively online system is not childs play. It's not like you can take people who are good at console programming and have them build the system. You need a good team like Blizzard's or Microsoft's and they don't grow on trees. Both of them have spent a ton of time and resources on their systems and have had to struggle with growing pains. And to create and maintain such a system without subscription money will be a huge challenge.

Customer service for Everquest was terrible as well but it was still a great product (I started on beta).  Having a beta, hopefully soon so I can stop checking that stupid website, should work out a lot of problems.  Sure, it's also a hype generator, but only if it works well and they provide good support.  I'm exciting about the beta.

Hey but I actually had a lot of fun in Star Wars Galaxies!  I joined later on, but not TOO late.  I basically played for a summer.  Building and decorating your personal home was pretty cool I thought...lots of options.  It got boring after a while though.   And then apparently it went to hell after I left.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
