If Sony's Music and Movie divisions control what content are released on to home, then there will be severe restrictions on what media content can be used by it. The PSP is the best example of this. :(

Huh? I don't have any problems playing my media content. In fact, the latest patch allows full-size resolution video to play without converting.

Please do tell me what you media content is, last I heard only official media codecs were allowed.

I don't want to BUY my couches with American dollars though.  And did you see the part about it getting boring?  It was fun when we had 20+ people parties in Star Wars, but otherwise home customization got dull.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

What i think people are forgetting/ignoring/not acknowledging is that if Sony can even MARGINALLY pull this off in the long run the PS3 is going to dominate. With HOME, if its even 3/4 as good as it appeard on GDC, we are talking the sims that people have always wanted....go check out sims sales worldwide, and this immersive sims environment will be FREE. Then, we have the BD market. If the current trend continues (I think after pirates and the spiderman movies are released we will see for sure) and if BD ends up as the format for future HD movie watching, that is one more group or feature that people get with their PS3. Then there are the games, regardless of cross console games, Sony can differentitate itself simply with Home, free online services and its BD player there will be plenty of quality games as well, DMC, MGS, FF, Lair, The Show.....

Its incredibly ambitious, the PS3. But we are starting to see Sonys plan, IMO. Home, BD, playstation brand....i can see it fold out successfully, if Home goes according to plan and BD pulls through....and i can see it fail, Home gets no support from game DEV's and it doesnt drive PS3 sales enough for devs to see the benefit of putting time into it....but my goodness, if they pull this off, we might be looking back on this first year and kicking outselves for not trusting that they knew what they were doing.....or we will look back and say wow, we could see they were stupid why couldnt they, lol.

But in the end, regardless of whether th PS3 is for you (home, BD, games) one cannot ignore the appeal it will have for far more people than any other console, potentially in the end.

I could be a dick and post links to the dozens of online communites that have existed since the late 90s but I won't. The fact is that there is a dedicated following for services like this but they do not attract that much attention from the general public.

apples and oranges man.  This is offered via the PS3.  Its going to hit a different market, it will be immediately accessible and associated to more people than 99% of those online communities you cited.  If i wanted to be a dick id say look how many FPS's there are, that Halo thing will never take off.

And then if i wanted to be a dick id say something about the many MMO's out there, and then you should have called Blizzard and said they shouldnt make WoW because of all the craptastic MMO's out there...bottom line, as my post said, if its done right and the things they over via game devs are limitless, the potential is out of this world, so dont compare this to some Habbo crap.

Well except for the fact that Lineage had more than 2 Million subscribers well before World of Warcraft was even dreamed up ...

Anyways, I wasn't saying home was a bad idea or that Sony shouldn't have developed it ...

I was saying that it is remarkably stupid to assume that a glorified chat program will sell millions of systems (at $600 per system) when similar programs are free and have difficulty convincing people to log onto them.

Please. Do. Tell me where you heard that. Because as far as I'm aware you've been able to do video like that on the PSP... since launch, or very near launch.

PSN ID: Kwaad

I fly this flag in victory!

Yeah, I see a program to re-encode videos.  I'm talking about watching/listening to media in their original format, re-encoding always takes a noticable hit in quality.  I personally used Divx for many years before switching to Xvid.  x/h264 is nice, but a bit problematic for editing. :(

Well, as soon as I get the 3.30 firmware I'll let you know what works.  Full res is now an option as of that update, so I'll see if re-encoding is still necessary.  I don't demand the highest quality and honestly can't tell the difference after I encode and put something on the PSP, but for me it'd be nice to just be able to drop any .avi (xvid or divx) straight to the memory card.  someone let us know if you will, as my girlfriend has the PSP and I've been lazy about it recently with elder scrolls sucking up all of my time.

I don't know why (can't put my finger on it... :P), but Im not impressed (only watched the first min or so).

Many, many moons ago developers realised that implementing a "3rd environment" as a general "menu browsing interface" - sucked arse. No one wants to spend ages *physically walking* from the bowling machine, to the pool table, to the arcade machine. You also end up with a bunch of generally unpolished games, with poor interface, long loading times (etc) in a virtual world. Basically thiings you tinker with - not serious games you actually play.

I understand and appreciate the idea of virtual content - and populating your virtual home with this content. Its graphical, pretty cool, and allows the user to be creative in terms of placement, colours, items, etc (assuming home actually allows you to do this stuff? and things are not just fixed location?).

There had better be HEAPS of free content as well - not just a few token items, with everything else to be "purchased" (maybe some people are into this, but I would *never* spend physical money on virtual assets - games are one thing, a new couch cover/texture is another). Otherwise so much for "free" HOME - the shell is free, but you need to pay for anything to actually use the service properly.

But if Sony expect people to WASTE their time walking around in a virtual world - instead of using a simple menu driven interface - good luck to them.

You haven't looked into this enough. You'll be able to use the XMB for all the stuff you just mentioned. You can press one button and simply go. Home isn't supposed to make you have to walk around to use the online interface of the PSN.
