Forums - Nintendo - Why 3DS will be far more successful than Sony's PS3-D Games

http://www.alexevansgames.blogspot.com

Hello all.

I think that Nintendo's inclusion of 3D in its next DS was quite possibly a masterstroke. Why? Well, it's in the screens. Literally. The main barrier to adoption of 3D is the price of the TV sets. No matter how amazing PS3 3D gaming is, Sony cannot possibly get everyone on board. When you buy a handheld though, you buy a screen (or two). Putting 3D on a handheld means that every buyer has access to the 3D capabilities of the system, which also means that you can make the 3D integral to the game experience without alienating any player. Zelda 3D puzzles can take full advantage of the added dimension, for example.

I discuss this in my latest blog post:

The 3DS is likely to be an economical hand held device.

PS3-D requires far more expensive hardware.

Discussion over.

plus it's not made to target the same dynamic, if anything the 3D DS would help 3D adoption on the PS3 not hinder it.

The thing I wonder is if there will be some possible gameplay applications or if it is just a visual improvement. For example, I've seen some post about being capable to see things around corners moving the head...I personally think this is not the case, I had the chance to try the Nvidia 3D vision on PC, it has got nothing like that, It just added depht in the image....but still we don't know if the tecnology behind 3ds works in the same way.

I'm not saying that 3DS will 'kill off' 3D on PS3 or anything. I'm just saying that Nintendo have managed to identify the big barrier to entry for 3D gaming and came up with a great way to circumvent it, which is why the 3DS will be much bigger than PS3 3D will be.

much bigger is subjective. All Playstation's 3's will already be 3d enabled. the consumer's would be able to buy upgrades later, the market's are not even the same.

if anything it will help push adoption of 3d which only will help further push adoption.

which mean's how large are we talking here already the PS3 will be most likely 35 million + 3D enabled machine's already before even the 3D DS even get's released

but Nintendo releasing it's very own 3D DS that will help adoption toward more 3D which may infact increase more PS3 sales.

if people like 3D that much not only Handheld but console top set boxes, which both Sony and Microsoft already do. the Wii may even get an upgrade to allow 3D so infact this help's Sony also.

With the use of head tracking (already working on the DSi), it will be very possible to 'look around corners.' Without it, I suspect you're right and the display will simply add depth. Of course, for all I know, the 3DS's display will have a restrictive viewing angle that prevents effective head tracking.

Whether that's a huge deal in gameplay terms... we probably won't know until somebody goes out, does it, and does it properly.

It's kinda too bad that the OP is correct about the 3DS being more successful than 3D in the living room. I see a lot more value in creating that 3D immersion on a big screen than on a handheld, but the steep barriers are going to make it tough. It's not just a matter of getting 3D TVs out there. Those TVs need to project a 3D image to multiple people at multiple viewing angles simultaneously, which is a technical challenge that a 3D display on a handheld doesn't face.

Yeah, 3D adoption for home consoles really shouldn't be pushed now; 3D TV's are pretty expensive, I would imagine? I find it hard to believe that adoption of those sets will be brisk, particularly since there was just a large wave of adoption to digital, HD, etc.

Bah!

lol, i love how much discussion the 3DS is getting with almost no factual basis revealed yet.

anyways, for me it comes down to this...is the 3DS an actually successor to the DS or is it just another iteration like the DSi. if it's the latter i don't expect too much of the device.

it's not going to too expensive very soon:

right now you can get 1080p HD 3D 55'" for less than $3,000

and the CE electronic companies have just started to ramp up production on 22", and 36" 3D ready TV's with glasses that would be less than $800.00

it's going to be a real drive forward for 3d adoption very fast because of how well 3D movies are doing in the theatre's.

avatar was for 3D as the Matrix was for DVD. adoption.
