I still say Nintendo, even when I mean Xbox or Playstation. I've seen it the other way around, though. Even the President said, "Turn off the Xbox."

I assumed he was talking to me so, I turned off the Xbox. I later turned it back on.

you must be a republican.

Actually, wouldn't that make him a Democrat. As the current president is a Democrat and all his legions of followers believe and do everything he says?

Well, I highlighted how he turned it back on....he went against the president for his own personal gain. Sounds republican to me!

Then that makes him a turncoat or a BlueDog Democrat. So, if he were Republican he would not have listened at all and would never have turned it on.

I defer to you, raistline. Bluedog does seem to be a more appropriate title.

If I were having this discussion 1.5 years ago, I would not even know about Bluedog Dem's. It is scary how fast one can get wrapped up in politcs. But I digress, let's get back on topic.

Nintendo always has and always will be the primary video game association phrase since NES firs spawned and became popular.

I stopped everything with politics. No more FOX, no more CNN or MSNBC... just colbert and jon stewart. I can't stand how convoluted everything in politics is. You can't just read something, you have to research it because everything is being spun. The republicans claim that factcheck.org is all lies. Dems claim that republicans are liars. Independant groups frame both parties, media spins stories. Misquotes everywhere. Then the history buffs get all crazy about things that happened 200 years ago and try to pull that BS, on both sides. Angry people who literally get purple faced they get so upset. I prefer them both in a comedic context only.

My grandma still calls the Nintendo 64 the Playstation at her house, I don't think I've even heard people say Nintendo recently, everyone just say's Wii.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

Hmm. I suppose it is, though perhaps not as strongly as back in the early 90's, when Nintendo was synonymous with videogames. Most people would just say 'I'm going to play some Nintendo', even if they'd play games on another console.
But the Playstation brand is still strong, too, although it's lost a LOT of its recognition in recent years.
However, besides Nintendo, I think 'Wii' is a word that's becoming more and more synonymous with videogaming, at least among the general public, excluding hardcore gamers.

I think they said nintendo all the time because the system was actually called nintendo (NES)

That's true, but people called it Nintendo, even when referring to different machines (aka non-Nintendo ones), and continued to do so right through the SNES era. Of course, the birth of the PS1 changed that, but even afterwards, well into the N64 era, I noticed tons of people mentioning 'Nintendo', when referring to videogames in general, especially parents and older people.

For years the word Playstation meant videogames, when poeple thought of videogames they thought of the words Playstation and Sony. Do you think Nintendo are now the name most people associate with videogames? Remember i'm not talking about only gamers, I mean the whole public. In other words, if you randomly picked 100 people and said what company represents videogames, would the most popular answer now be Nintendo?

Uh.....before Playstation came around, an entire generation just called video games 'Nintendo' or 'Game Boy'.  And before that it was 'Atari' or 'Pac Man'.  I can't tell you how many people I know who will still mistake a handheld device like an iphone or a DS for a 'game boy'.  Yet I've never heard anyone who's called video games 'Playstation' or referred to Playstation alone when speaking about video games as a whole.  The people who actually know the distinction between a system enough to know the brand names 'Playstation' and 'Sony' are regular gamers.

So to answer your question, if you took a poll of a random assortment of people, in all age groups, I think you'd find Nintendo easily came out as the most identifiable brand in gaming.  Some people don't even know Sony or Microsoft is tied to gaming.  Nearly everyone has heard of Mario and Nintendo.

You have to remember that before PS1 gaming wasn't very mainstream. At least not in Europe. PS1 was for most of us first touch in gaming and because of that PlayStation was the name that was synonym for gaming a long time.

Well... I hardly ever hear anyone say "Nintendo". If they DO talk about Nintendo they basicly say "Wii" or "DS".

I would say PlayStation is still the biggest name in gaming worldwide as of now. The dominance in the 90's and early 00's was way too great, and that time was also when videogaming became SUPER popular. I mean, the PS2 is STILL selling 50k units a week after over 10 years on the market.

It's very much a regional thing, but yeah Europe was very much fractured market for games pre-PlayStation, with a lot of home grown computer formats overshadowing the consoles (Speccy, C64, Amiga, etc).  Post-crash, Nintendo pretty much unified America from day one (well, until Sega came back and split the market with Genesis).  Nintendo also unified Japan more or less, though more niche platforms like PC-88, MSX and PC Engine still did alright.

In the US and Japan, the NES sold about as well as PS1 actually.

Hell yes.  For me, it's always been nintendo, ever since the NES
