Forums - Sony - I've tried to pretend it wasn't an issue but I have to admit it is now

5400RPMs is typically quieter....and the performance gain isn't worth the noise because it's hardly noticable, but yeah...My Ps3 has a 320GB WD 5400RPM, and my brother's has a 500GB WD 5400RPM....Gotta love the standard HDD

And when I first read this thread title, I thought you were going to mention that you had an STD or something, lol, must be listening to too much loveline

Just waiting for that PS Vita to come out so I can play some full featured games on the go with that beautiful screen and control scheme...

The scorpio didn't work so well with my 80gb ps3, though it was a 500gb one.
Then I tried a 500gb from Samsung which worked better than the scorpio but stil not perfect.

So, finally I went with the Seagate Momentus 320gb 7200rps 16mb cache which works like a charm.

7200rps???i taught the ps3 can only do 5400rps?

The phat can do 7200rps (I know since I'm using one), though load times are only getting minimally faster.

Dunno about the slim.

cool,i have the phat so i might splash out on a 7200rpm hard drive, cheers.

7200 rpm HDD create more heat, just a warning. Load speeds are marginally faster, so it's questionable whether the extra heat is worth saving 2 or 3 seconds on load times.

Heh, I'm still using my 40 GB HDD on my PS3, I haven't gotten around to updating yet. I can't really install PS3 game data to the HDD for faster load times, but I manage.

Currently playing: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, NBA2k11, Metal Gear Solid, Picross 3d

I put a WD Scorpio Black 320GB SATAII 16MB Cache in my 40gb fat, never had any issues with it, the faster rpm does only give a minimal performance increase but the 16mb cache was the reason why I went with a 7200.

I'd recommend getting a 500gb tbh, you pay a little more but you can be sure you won't be running out of space unless you go daft and store hundreds of movies.

My recommendation is to go for the same make and speed as is in the PS3 at the moment just up the size. The other thing to remember is that you will need two. One to back up all your saves, game data and downloads (you dont want to be re down loading them if you can help it) If you have an older model (i diont know about the slim) Dont go for a 7200rps. I did and with in 3 months I had Ylod, i think due to the extra power being used by the Hdd.

assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

I agree with joshin don't get a 7200RPM. All it will do is increase heat inside the console and create more noise for minimal savings on load times. Developers build for the PS3 default hardware which includes a 5400RPM, so you might as well match it.

I also agree with the amazon link above, as that is a good drive and matches the best price you'll find in the US.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Honestly you dont need more than 320gig. Larger HD is not safe for the console. If you want to save films from Play TV, just move them to main menu and then on the flash drive.

If it's just size your interested in then by all means get a 5400, the ps3 doesn't take advantage of the 7200, that's why you see nominal speed increase but in my opinion the cache makes a bigger difference.

As for the heat issues, its a fallacy, it may have been true years ago but the newer 7200 run cooler than some older 5400, I've had mine for nearly 2 years and haven't had a single issue.

you could possibly get 320 gigs for 50. depending on a sale. the ps3 has a full backup tool, but it actually requires 3 drives.

I just copied my save game data onto a usb drive and pasted it in place on the new hard drive. games have to reinstall..but who cares its a lot cheaper.

also as for people saying 7200rpm, the ps3 cannot write or readat that speed, so its absolutely pointless.

7200rps hasn't been a prolem for me. It's quiter than my original 80gb drive.

As some people said though, there might be a higher risk due to it getting warmer.

I'm gonna say this:

Don't get a 500gb drive.

I had two of them and even though they worked they had slight hiccups with some games.
Same with a friend of mine.

Get a 320gb one instead.

Looking forward to: FF Versus XIII / LBP2 / The Last Guardian / Yakuza 4 / ICO Collection

What you want to have (or buy) is two things.

an External HDD
and HDD
and then your done. just back the stuff on your External , and then change your old HDD (80 GB is small! , upgrage to the 250 GB ) and then copy the stuff from your external thats it.
