Sure, if you compare Microsoft's best effort, 360, to Sony's worst, PS3, then they're equal.

But Microsoft has thrown billions of dollars at the Xbox brand and has yet to equal the success of any of the winning consoles over the years. 360 might outsell Super Nintendo by the end of its run, but it will have had more time on the market than SNES. I guess it will also outsell Atari, but that system was released over 30 years ago to a market that didn't even exist yet.

Xbox has achieved some nice things but if it weren't for Microsoft's big bucks it would have died long ago.

Sony has also thrown billions at the Playstation brand this generation just to stay in the console business. In that respect Microsoft are ahead I guess in that they've thrown less? money away.

Gran Turismo is globally more present than Halo.

GT is technically a sports game using licensed vehicles , normally I dont consider it because it uses licensed vehicles but for this case I will.

Is GT the only game that sony's first party has made with global appeal with that many years on the market.........and besides Halo isnt only a brand in gaming , it is also on TV and Novel....that in essence makes it a bigger brand than GT.

Ok... GT has cars that sell millions year after year and people still drive them decades after getting them GT IS BIGGER!!! lolz

Gran Turismo is so big it gets all of its licenses free of charge because it becomes free global advertising.

GT has its own academy top that.

Oh and tons of Games are on Tv or have novels (Kirby, Resistance, Pokemon, GoW,) doesnt mean they are bigger.

The top 2 selling GT games have sold more than the top 3 selling Halo games. (Or did last time i had the GT vs Halo debate)

Car makers ASK to be in Gran Turismo, and have Polyphony Digital actually design some stuff for them.

Gran Turismo has been on TV a lot. There has even been the "Gran Turismo Awards".

GT is a way bigger brand name than Halo.

Microsoft has made great strides this generation and change the way console games will be played from here on out (Live and Achievements).  But they're just not on the same level as Sony yet.  I prefer the 360 over the PS3 as well, but the PS2 continues to sell 10 years later and Microsoft has not released a competitor in the handheld market yet either.  The original Xbox was shelved 5 years after it's birth (I know they didn't have a choice), and outside of NA, the Playstation name is still a stronger seller.

I also don't think its fair to compare the 360 to just the PS3 when your talking about gaming brands.  It would be like discarding everything Nintendo did before they released the Gamecube and calling them a failure because the PS2 outsold it dramatically.  Meanwhile, the GBA was flying off the shelves.

If MS launches their next console at $600 and it sells half as much as the PS3 I would say yes.
This alone answered the question for me. I was and still am flabergasted by how much the PS3 sold given the early screw ups. I seriously wonder if even Ninty could have pulled that off

No..

Playstation sells WAYY more software than XBOX, and sells WAYY more hardware, every part of the world..

so Playstation is still a much bigger brand than Xbox, and always has been.

If you want to be technical then yes , sony does way more software and hardware than MS BUT that is only because they have 3 platforms on the market compared to MS having only one......if you want to evaluate brand power you need to compare both of them on an equal platform and that is comparing the 360 and ps3.

The 360 sells more software and has a higher market penetration than the ps3......that is the jist of my logic.

so you shouldn't ask Sony Vs MS.you should ask X360 Vs PS3.Cause sony sells a lot more hardware and software than MS

No, they are not equal to Sony, in my opinion.

Sony is much more larger than Microsoft when it comes to gaming, as Sony has been in the industry for quite some time. I mean, just look at the PS1 and PS2.. both over 100 million consoles sold.. I don't think Microsoft will be able to touch that.

Like someone mentioned before, PS3 consistently does well in all 3 regions. The 360 sells good, but not that great in the others/japan. If PS3 and 360 both launched on the same day with the same price, I think the PS3 would be ahead right now. But keep in mind the 360 had a year lead.

Meh.. That's just my opinion, if we compare Sony vs Microsoft in the GRAND scheme of things... Sony has the win.
