my favorite game for 2009 much more solid campaign than CoD in my opinion ;D lol
unique one?...hmm let's go for FFXIII..but still i can't help mentioning GOW3,

you dont wanna buy God of War for him?then buy him Uncharted 2...you cant do any wrong with that...
Thinking about it for the price of GoW3 you could probably pick him up BOTH Batman and Uncharted 2, second hand if not brand new.
Batman is nothing like watchmen and both (batman and uncharted NOT watchmen) are purely awesome. Batman is really new and different and although some people say its repetitive (some bosses do repeat) you never notice it and it is purely a brilliant and amazingly well made game.
Uncharted 2 is similar in quality but different in gameplay and often has you sitting on the edge of your seat while you're playing, with online multiplayer to boot.
I've seen Batman for as little as £18 new around a few places recently and Uncharted 2 from £25, that's roughly $60 I think for both together? It'd be a shame to miss either of these games as they both truly stand out from the crowd.
I wouldn't recommend Heavy Rain for a kid, it's an amazing game, but more like a mature film than an action game, relies a lot on emotional attachment to the characters and wanting to look after your family.
Edit: Just to add, I've played a couple of hours into Darksiders and it seems ok, but nothing as outstanding as Uncharted 2 or Batman, especially with God Of War 3 coming out it's not worth getting it just yet imo as its a hack and slash like GoW, but not to the same standard. I've got and completed all the games mentioned (apart from not completed darksiders).

If you're insistent on not buying GoW3, at least steer clear of God of War ripoffs.
Or "homages" or "tributes" or whatever you want to call them.
So, no.
Just give him GoW III. Believe me, he'll be very happy, trust me.
You have to understand that, when you are giving a gift, you should give a gift that the other person is gonna like. Don't try to surprise him, don't try to give something new... just go for the easy and best choice; give something that he expects and he likes.

Again, steer clear of God of War ripoffs.
Here, I'll give you 22 (and counting) reasons to buy GoW3:
