Forums - Website Topics - Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

A restaurant is a place you PAY for their service(aka food). A soup kitchen is food provided for poor people(free!). Basically subscription site versus a free site.

This is a very ruthless business, with very tight margins. It is easy for anyone to just throw something up and demand attention. Like, on this site for example, outside of the sales numbers, most of it is content people happened to produce with their own time, and effort. People are reading what other people produce. People feel they invested their time here and produced content. I know I don't get paid for writing on here, and it is something I just do for entertainment. I also have to figure out how to get a pan-site rating system paid for, and get traffic there, and also get people to pay somehow, or get paid for their focus.

Anyhow, no one asks people to put this up on the Internet and if a game site goes down, then that would end up meaning one less place people would care to visit.

My brother helps me run my cpu's as I know very little about them. The ads can be annoying as hell. If It was just one here and there on every site I went to, It would be fine. But, some sites every page you click is full of ad's. I do not know where they come from how they work or anything else. I just know I have ad blocker with firefox to help protect my cpu and to make it less annoying when going to some sites. I am sorry if they hurts the way some sites make money pay their staff and everything else, but if not for being able to block ad's I would not brother going to them anyways.

O and btw i kinda had to put on the pop up blocker because this site was giving me viruses but its off now

Some sites go insane overboard on ads though. Not naming any names, but there is one video game charting site that I visit where the main page has about 6 flash ads going through it and the forums often have multiple video ads that play automatically with sound, are stuck in between posts and are complemented with about 4 other flash ads on the page. The site is a buggy mess in my browser and brings it to its knees more than any other site that I visit.

I could totally understand someone ad blocking a site like that. I know it can't be cheap to run a site, but there has to be a better method than the insane measures that certain sites go to.

If you get rid of the Evony ad's i'll turn it off, anything but boobs being shoved in my face whenever im around here please.

You know Brett used to just ban the Hell out of people for admitting to ad-blocking on VGChartz?

I don't think that holding the ads hostage is going to do you much good.

Well im not gonna' lie if thats what you want me to do, i hate those ad's because that try to grab the interest of 13 year old boys or 50-something year old men.

That an' the fact i've been accused of looking at softcore porn more then a few times by some friends because the ad's give that impression, its a pet-peeve but would be nice if it was dealt with imo.

On the flip side, i haven't seen those ad's for awhile now so thats good, its been WKC Euro release and another Free MMORPG that i dont care about but atleast its not of half naked women.

I had an ad blocker, then I turned it off once & ever since I haven't been able to turn it on again

so lol @ me

but yay for the site!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I switch it on and off, depending on the quality of ads at that moment. A couple of months ago, when it degenerated into "Mum finds cure for yellow teeth" and "Get ripped in 2 weeks!", I blocked them, but now they seem to be good again, so I'll leave them unblocked.

People might be blocking the ads because at one time they were out of control. I rarely notice them now other than the annoying back drops I accidently click. Who actually buys gaming shirts? Its like vagina repellent.

Those ads between the first and second post in a thread are really annoying, though. Do they have to be there?
