Halo 3:ODST-4.69m

An add on to the popular game Halo 3, sold 4.69 million. Let's assume that half the people got it for the 4 hour campain so that's about 2.3 million sales for ODST's campain.

This is where things start to go sour. We have no statistics to suggest anything about whether or not people buy this for the campaign - Hell, I don't own ODST myself, but isn't the game's multiplayer mode exactly the same as Halo 3's plus some DLC?

Reach will have a 10 hour campain so that's 2.3m times 2.5. which would mean ~5.75 people will get it for the campain.
BLAGH! This doesn't work at all. You can't pretend there's an absolute correlation between campaign length and people interested in playingn said campaign!
The fanbase will be a lot bigger because of more consoles sold and the odst bundles. Also, there will be practically no competition so let's ass another ~1m.
P.....practically no competition? A much bigger fanbase? For Halo? How do you measure these things? At what point do you sit down and say, "Yeah, this seems like a pretty reasonable thing"?
Now Halo 3:ODST has practically no online, it just gives you maps for Halo 3. So if we assume that half of halo 3 buyers bought halo 3 for multiplayer and half of the people the bought ODST bought it for multiplayer.
Wait! Why are we assuming that? What makes you think that half the people who bought ODST didn't own Halo 3? What is your basis for that assumption?
So far we have 10.86m/2 + 4.69m/2-2.3= people that buy reach for mulitplayer. We get about 7.73 million buy Reach for multiplayer.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
So if you add the buyers for singleplayer, multiplayer, and add in the bigger fanbase/consolebase you get a total of 14.48 million! That will be the sales of Halo Reach!
Do you guys understand?
No. Explain to me how you arrived at these numbers. Any of them. Please.

Hahaha! The OP might just be so serious he's kidding, similar to Deadly Premonitions' "so bad it's good". Regardless, this thread is pure gold!

lol thx

Wow, I understand fully!  I see the light.  Ok, hold on a second.  The last time someone told people to "Do the math", it was used to get people to buy an Atari Jaguar!

You sure you want math to be done?

Funniest thing about ODST remains how it was justified for full-price when it hadn't released yet, and when it did release and didn't follow Halo 3's sales, it became "well, it's just an expansion". (reminds me of similar type of responses with GT5P)

Holy shit this thread went to hell pretty fast. Guys, everyone on this site is biased one way or another, some just tend to show it a lot more than others... generally because they can get away with it. Yes, you know who you are... :)

Why?  GT5:P was never positioned as a full price game and was never expected to sell like one.  I don't see the annalogy.  ODST started as an expansion, then became full price with justifications as to why, and was launched as a full game.  GT5:P was always a 'Prologue' priced as one and sold as one.

I think L4D2 is a better annalogy, as that seemed to start as an expansion to L4D, then grew, was positioned as a full price game and sold as such.

Sorry, I may just be having a lazy Sunday brain day, but while I get what you mean about ODST I don't see the link to Prologue.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I would like to share my view on Halo Reach's sales in comparison to Halo 3.

I believe it cannot outsell Halo 3. The best it can do actually have equal sales as Halo 3. I believe this not because it has a series to compete to called COD. Not because Halo 3 is the peak sales for the Halo series and certainly not because Halo series is in a decline.

Halo Reach is a prequel right? But prequel or not, it's gonna do at least 4.5 mil+ Week 1. There are people who will buy this coz it's a Halo title and most people will buy coz by the time Halo Reach is out, people will know that Reach takes the Halo series to a new level in terms of gameplay and graphics. But the fact that it's a prequel and not a sequel will prevent it outdoing Halo 3. How many prequel games have you seen outsell a sequel game? This brings me to my next point.

I reckon install base has got nothing to do with this. So you claim that the install base has increased since 2007. Well if it's increased, those who love Halo would've at least bought Halo 3 along with their X360 right? Hence overtime Halo 3 has managed to reach 10 mil sales. What I don't understand is how people who aren't interested in Halo would buy Halo Reach? If people didn't buy Halo 3 or ODST, Why should they buy Reach? That's not gonna happen. And then let's assume that people who weren't interested in Halo 3 buy Reach. Since it's a prequel, wouldn't you think people who want to buy Halo 3 and maybe ODST after since it's cheap now? So that's 1 more copy of Halo 3 sold for every Reach copy sold to new people and hence Reach cannot outsell Halo 3.

And that is why the best Reach can do is equal the sales of Halo 3.

Of course we really cannot find out who's right or wrong until at least next year but that is what I believe on this matter.

Not sure if anyone posted this yet, I am too lazy to read all this thread, but I did see someone say Halo has lost its community or something:

Less because there's something called Call Of Duty now.....and its big competition to halo.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I think it's hilarious that some people in this thread have the impression that Call of Duty just emerged in the past year. Seriously, CoD 4 doesn't count as a Call of Duty game anymore?
