Forums - Sales Discussion - Famitsu: Wii passes 10 million units

From GamesIndustry.biz:

Nintendo's Wii console has now sold over 10 million units in Japan.

That's according to local data specialist and Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, which puts the figure at 10,009,736 units, as of February 28, 2010.

Consumer blog Kotaku notes that Sony's PlayStation 2 reached the 10 million milestone quicker, after 131 weeks on the market. The Wii has hit 10 million after 170 weeks.

Enterbrain also puts PlayStation 3 unit sales in the region at 4,766,408 and Xbox 360 sales at 1,235,049 units.

I don't remember if we had Famitsu numbers in last week. If so, then we can do the subtraction and get this week's numbers.

I could be doing my math wrong, but would this means that if vgchartz is wrong than we overtracked the ps3 by 60-80k.  Overtracked the 360 by some odd units, and the wii is almost in line.

(remember I said if)

Did the DS not hit the thirty million milestone on the same week?

Roughly 1 in 4 people owning a DS (not quite, but I doubt multi-ownership is a huge factor) is very impressive. 1 in 12 owning a Wii, not so impressive, though it probably looks better in terms of 'households'.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I'm not sure if we have famitsu numbers, but it is about 287k away based on media create numbers (as of 2/21).  So probably by the end of March or so.

You doubt muti-owner ship is a big factor ??

Comeon look at the people here, some have 3-4 DS or even more. And I bet that most people have 2. A DS and DSi, we had so many iterations of the DS and probably everyone who has bought the first one bought another one they improved quite a bit.

Most people will have 2 maybe one is broken or outdated, especially in Japan this plays a role. Infact everyone I know who has a DS has atleast 2.

Some might have just one but some other have probably 3 or more. I think at best its 18 Million different people which own a DS. That would be 1/6 of the population and is pretty realistic.

It would be a good poll: How many DS do you own. Maybe I am wrong but what experienced is that multi-ownership is a giant factor especially with the DS and its many good improvments over the time. I havent seen the first DS for a long time.

Congrats to Nintendo.

All the trackers tend to be a little different.  Media Create actually claims more Japanese GameCube sales than Nintendo reports shipping to the region!

Famitsu/Enterbrain does have the highest coverage though (around 70-80%), while Denegeki & MC each cover notably less (around 40-60% iirc).  Dengeki also reported Wii passing 10m this week, and VGC is right in line, so at least most seem on the same page for Wii.

I wonder how high Wii will end up?  It's still got it's biggest release ahead of it yet (DQX), depending on the console's shelf life, I could see another 5-6m.

Old DS units don't usually disappear though, they get handed down or sold used.  Nintendo actually talked about in their IR reports iirc, how DS gets "recirculated" more frequently and why that likely helps the attach ratio well above traditional handhelds (GB, GBA, PSP).

18m+ DS might be a good guess at "household" ownership though... which tends to inherently favor handhelds (usually 1 per person, while consoles are usually 1 per household)...

Most people have two..? Show some statistics if you are to make a point, please don't use anecdotal evidence. Even a poll on this site wouldn't be very useful, it's a self selected group of enthusiasts, self-selecting to post in the poll.
