I agree with the Wii reviews being lenient.

Most games aren't .2 below, Uncharted 2 is .4 below there is no pattern other than 90% of the time, the reviews are lower than meta

EDIT: oh, and a ridiculous number of games get 8.5 for gameplay, and they aren't that consistent as there are so many different reviewers

Metacritic uses vgchartz as a pattern

Ergh, I should bookmark that post I made ages ago and then just copy and paste it each time this comes up. Basically it's number 2 in Montana's post above.

I'll go see if I can find my old post.

edit 1 - the list in the post above me is out of date and hasn't been updated in months since I stopped tracking that.

edit 2 - found and modified my old post:

I keep track of a lot of stats for our official reviews. The pattern the OP sees isn't too far off actually - when compared with Metacritic across the board, VGC is slightly above average for Wii games, roughly on par for PS3 games, and slightly below for 360 games.

This is my explanation:

It's not a case of the site being biased - there's no way you could orchestrate such a bias amongst 16 different people (that's roughly how many active reviewers we have at any one time) and 5 different content editors. It's my view that the scoring differences are less about console preference, and more about how harsh or lenient the reviewer who happens to review a particular game (and own a particular console) is.

I'll use Torillian as an example because I know he won't mind. His main console is the PS3 and his secondary console the Wii. I don't think anyone would accuse him of being anti-PS3 (and if they do they're plain wrong), but he's one of our harsher scorers. Given that he writes far more PS3 reviews for the site than anyone else, the end result is that for PS3 reviews we tend to be roughly in-line with Metacritic.

Then take myself. I'm our primary 360 reviewer, the site's harshest scorer across the board, and also the site's 2nd most active reviewer. The end result of all this is that we tend to be slightly below Metacritic for 360 games. Not because I dislike the 360 - it's my main console afterall - but because I'm a harsh scorer whose main console happens to be the 360. If my main reviewing console was Wii then the same thing would happen to our Wii average.

You'll find this with our primary Wii reviewers as well - there are some who score harshly when compared with Metacritic (O-D-C is a good example), and then there are those who score generously (I won't give an example since I don't think it's fair to do so without their permission, but you could easily work it out for yourself).

In short, I think the reason for the difference is the harshness/leniency of the main reviewers vis-à-vis Metacritic and which consoles they happen to own and enjoy, not site bias.

I think it's a question of which reviewer is reviewing each game. That doesn't mean they need to score a game 1.5 points from what it should be so that they can seem "unbiased" and "cool", and pander to a whole different group of fans who don't even own that console or
that they need to score a game 1.5 or more points above what it should be, so that fans won't get mad at them if they gave it lower than what they thought. It's a fine line.

I only have a problem with two reviews.. One of them getting a score waaaay over deserved, and the other getting a score that stirred up a complete shitstorm because of how they reviewed it, and how the score was .1 away from a certain special score... It just seems to me like they did that last part on purpose.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

VGChartz reviewers don't jerk off to HD graphics like some dudes at major websites, that's why you're questioning HD titles fair reviews in this website.

This gen is the gen were we got about 10 "best games ever"

Including the utter shit called GTA4.

HD reviewers at other sites love flash and are swayed by purty graphics. While at the same time everyone knows that most reviewers don't like the Wii. Remember most of people at one time thought the world was flat. While the few new the truth and were punished.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Do tell. I can think of a few options for the first, but "special score"?
