It’s easy to get upset when you purchase an item from someone only to find out whatever you bought doesn’t work. It’s even worse if that item you bought was a gaming system. One Utah man, who bought a used PSP that allegedly didn’t work, kidnapped the teenager he bought the device from, and drove more than 20 miles, making various threats along the way.
Police have arrested Jose Eduardo Espinosa-Arellano and he is now in Utah County jail after the incident. Police believe he got mad after purchasing the used PSP from the teen, only to find out that it didn’t work the way he thought it should.
The man went back to the teens house, requested his money back, and after the teen declined, he took him for a ‘ride.’
“The victim, in an attempt to try to diffuse the situation, said, ‘Let’s talk about it.’ And the suspect said, ‘Let’s go for a ride,’” said American Fork, Utah police Sgt. Gregg Ludlow. “After he had him in his vehicle, he began driving towards Salt Lake, and the victim became nervous and said, ‘I don’t’ want to go to Salt Lake. Please let me out.’ And he refused.”
The teen began texting his brother during the drive to Salt Lake City. The brother alerted Highway Patrol. As the car stopped at a red light, the teen made a dash for a nearby gas station to find help.
“The suspect made comments to him were very concerning to the victim. He felt like he was in grave danger, and that’s the reason he jumped out of the car,” Ludlow said.
Espinosa-Arellano may face kidnapping charges. This is a lesson to both buyer and seller. Be careful of what you buy, and never take a ride with strangers."
